How to fix hand position in back swing
« on: April 14, 2009, 05:49:01 AM »
I have a problem with my hand position during my back swing. I am right handed and I turn my hand to the righ side of the ball during my back swing then I try to get back underneath it durning my down swing. I have a track that usually clips the thumb hole on its fist two refs. even with a ball that is pin above and to the right of ring finger.

What my question is: how do i fix my hand position in the back swing and also how do i fix my track from clipping my thumb hole. when i throw my spare ball (plastic ball) it goes straigh over the thumb holw all the way down the lane.

Please help me out.

Thanks

bigfish,

First, I would get some video of yourself, you may be able to fix after seeing what is going on.

May not just be your hand turning, but your elbow/arm also.  Your elbow may be coming out away from your body, causing you to lose some leverage and have to muscle your swing more.  Think about leading with the inside of your elbow, the inside of your elbow coming up through your target.  This should help you to keep your forearm and wrist/hand behind the ball instead of to the side.

Your hand position is why you are thumping the holes.  Pretty close to being a full roller.  This problem can be fixed, but it is going to feel funny at first, you are changing your muscle memory.  Your scores may suffer some at first, but I would be willing to bet that your swing gets looser and you become more accurate in the long run.

Hope this helps ya...

I agree with Mike. It's hard to see what your hand is doing, however, if your elbow is in a good position the hand HAS GOT to follow. Most of us can focus on the elbow staying close easier than the hand.

Everyone is built differently, too. Some of us are more flexible than others. Don't worry if you don't look like Ken Simmard (or anyone else) with your back swing. Just bowl like YOU bowl.

When Jim Furyk first hit the PGA tour people were always over-analyzing his golf swing (it's unique). However at impact his clubface is square so who cares?

In bowling just recognize that there may be certain elements of your game that are unique to you, but if your release is good AND consistent you'll always be okay. If you can repeat it, you can probably find a way to score. Good luck.

regarding the turning the hand to the right side of the ball, when i look at clips of tommy jones and mike fagan they seem to do that as well.  if you look up "fagan time warp" on youtube you'll see a nice clip breaking down his swing.  they also say that preloading the ball by turning the thumb outwards away from the body helps generate more spin.
