How to get out of a slump?
« on: September 22, 2004, 11:36:55 AM »
I would like to know if anybody has any suggestions of getting out of a slump. I've been having trouble lately, and can't average above 180 to save my life. If anybody has suggestions, I'm open.

Thanks,
Jason

Go back to the basics sometimes we get it in our head that we have to have a million rev's on the ball and we may overthrow trying to do that try just a natural easy fluid swing work on timing it will all come back mostly just go back to basics sure hope this helps

Thanks, but just to tell you, I'm not a high rever, I let the ball come off my hand, and don't do much to the ball. I don't like to put a lot of revs, then I can't control it. Thanks anyways, I can try to relax more.

stay as positive as possible. Slumps are more about attitude and self inflicted unrealized expectations.

quote:
The reason it takes so long for some to come out of a slump is that they keep making major changes in their mechanics thinking those major changes will be the answer, when practically all the time, it is a minor change that has taken place.

A minor flaw can be almost anything in ones approach and release. It does not happen over nite. It gradually creeps into ones mechanics and when repeated begins to feel normal, thus, the difficulty in picking up on it.

Bones, you are correct. No truer words were ever spoken about slumps. I have been in one of if not the worse slump I have ever had and it has been going on for awhile now. I did as you said about making major changes in my mechanics.
Also numerous changes in grip, span, pitches, and etc. trying to correct the problems.

I won't know for sure until I go practice Sun. or Mon., but I "think" I may have discovered the problem in the third game of league bowling today to be in my positioning of the ball in my stance coupled with my first step in my approach to be the problem....As you said, the flaw gradually creeps in of which I think may have happened. As I said, I can tell you more after my next practice session.

Another area you might want to take a moment to ponder that hasn't been mentioned is your mental game. For some when they roll a bad game or set they begin to have doubt in their bowling capabilities which sometimes leads to over thinking and it becomes a snowball effect after that.  If your head is clear you'll find the flaw in your mechanics if that what's causing the low scores.

I was getting to the point the past few weeks I was not even breaking 500.  I talked to my coach and practiced.  He suggested that I make sure and make time for practice.

His theory is that people who bowl a number of leagues and tournaments figure practice is not necessary.  the error in that thinking is that during league and tournaments score is important.  Practice is a time to get the feel of the ball, release, etc.  Score is not important in practice.

Since I got in some practice in on Thursday (4 games) and Sunday (3 games)  I am at least breaking 500.  Thursday night 540, Tuesday 696 for 4, and last night 534.
