Ball Purchase Thoughts....I need some thoughts please
« on: September 24, 2014, 08:05:37 PM »
I have a first time league bowler joining my team this year. He has been using my IQTF and is straight up the back and maybe has a touch of backup. 3 week average is like 145.

He needs a ball and I have a few questions......House is AMF Syn and more on the lighter side of medium with 5 man teams, so lots of early friction and Backend movement. They will not tell us the pattern but about 39-40 feet. High speed mid revs do well.

Looking at three balls....Rumble, and Wrecker by Roto Grip and the Wipe Out by Storm. Good entry balls.

My questions are these,

1) is he a full roller and if so would a FR drilling benefit him? If not, what would one suggest for a layout that he can work into?
2) is he better off with some shine or a dull surface for the best hitting power?
3) he is a head pro at a local golf course so with a little practice should be able to start making the ball hook in time....suggestion if a non FB layout is not used?
4) last, since he is a head pro that has a small retail shop, he is very aware of his customers buying on line or elsewhere. Would buying on line and having the local pro shop drill it be out of line and what price is fair for a thumb slug and finger grips?

Thanks much

For what it's worth, here are my suggestions:

I think his best option is to maybe barter some golf lessons for bowling lessons. You can probably find a shop operator that has some coaching certifications that may be interested in something like that. If no takers, I suggest talking to a pro shop that might entertain the idea of providing a lesson with the purchase of a ball. Especially since he is new to the game.

For the ball selections, I think the wrecker should be the last option, simply because it can be flippy. For a beginner, starting out it may be difficult to control the back end when he starts to release the ball differently.

Best of luck to him and kudos to you for letting him use your equipment starting out.

He would for sure, but he works for the City and that would not fly.

I was thinking the same about the Wrecker myself.

Thanks

One thing for sure, you need to determine if he's a full roller.  Look at his oil rings, if they're between the thumb and finger holes he's a full roller.  A semi-roller track will be left (for a right hander) of both the thumb and finger holes.  And yes, a full roller needs a layout designed to prevent the track from flaring into the gripping holes.  I suggest buying his first ball from the local pro shop where you can get some help.  --  JohnP

A backup full roller would be almost physiologically impossible.  In any event layout is a non issue until the guy learns a hook release.

Grease Monkey or Grease Monkey POW
Both give great performance for the price and are excellent choice for new bowlers

Get the guy fitted properly first.

So he is not a FR from what I see......his track is very close to the fingers and moves slightly away from his thumb as he is slightly backing the ball up at times. I attempted to get a PAP from his track marks after our league and it is really close to 5.5" down 1/2"

Sounds like an inverted 3/4 roller...but not a back up ball...
