Which average would I use?
« on: August 11, 2005, 01:44:25 AM »
Ok, I found and read the topic and posts regarding summer averages and whether or not they count. I am under the impression that they don't count.

So, if I enter a tournament next month, the tournament rules state that you have to use your highest average after 21 games or your highest average of the previous season. The tournament is on Sept. 23rd. At that time, I will not have logged 21 games in either of my fall leagues yet. Do I use my average from my summer league or my highest average from last fall?

The summer league is sanctioned so I see no reason why I cant use that average. In case it matters, I am averaging higher in the summer league than I did last fall.

Hey ROCK .. I'm probable WRONG .. usually am wrong when it comes to RULES.

My understanding is (assuming winter and summer leagues were sanctioned)you would use your last year Winter average unless this past Summer average is 10 or more points HIGHER then you are to use the Summer average!

Joe, i believe you are right.  MOST tournament state that you will use your previous fall/winter average, unless your summer average is 10 pins or more higher.

Ok, so if my summer league average is within the 10, I use last year's average. Otherwise, summer it is.

Just a suggestion, put your highest Winter Book of 21 games or more on the application.  Then when you get to the tournament, talk to the tournament directors.

I have bowled tournaments in the past that took one years book, but the most recent average was over 10 pins higher with the required number of games. When I arrived at the tournament, I let them know in some they rerated me in others they said there was no 10 pin rule and I used the original aveage.

I am a tournament director and I agree with Thongprincess. Most of the time tournaments won't count the summer, but that is not garunteed. Always ask or call the tournament director in advance, it is better to have to change your average once you get there or just get it right from the start than t be disqualified. If your league turns in your average during the summer, it will be available on Bowl.com and the tournament can check and decide to use that average. According to USBC rules, the summer average does count and is supposed to be in the book. Problem is that the printed books have to be at the printers in May or June to be ready for the fall. Would be impossible to put them in the book. I think the idea when those average were made official at the convention severaral years ago (I was at the convention that year) was that a supplemental section was supposed to be published and sent out in September. Please ask, don't win the tournament and get disqualified. Tournament Directors do not like to disqualify bowlers and if you appeal the decision it will delay the payout and upset all of the bowlers that get a letter that the payout is delayed instead of a check.

I also run USBC certified tournaments
I use last year winter high average of 21 games or more
but if you don't have 21 games in the current season
I will take a certified summer average of 21 games
as third chice so bowlers don't have to bowl scracth

and if bowlers don't bowl in center I will want
signed proof of average
some bowlers say I forget my average or it was about!

LOL I started reading this, I thought for the first time, and saw a reply from me.  Then I noticed the original post was from '05.  At first I thought I must have answered in my sleep.

i run several tournaments a year in northern california and nevada.  for 2007, we changed our average rules to include 2006 summer.  our rules state that the bowler's tournament entering average will be the higher of 2004/2005, 2005/2006, and summer 2006 averages.  we also state that if the 1/1/2007 average is 10 or higher than any of the above averages, it must be used.  we have found that many people bowl very well during the summer because they know that most tournaments do not count summer averages.  i also bowl quite a few tournaments and i always read the entry rules very carefully.  you never know what rules may or may not affect you.
