Comment on my Grip please
« on: January 04, 2007, 11:56:00 AM »
Ive recently decided that i may have gone overboard on lengthening my span.  Ive posted pics of both my new & older spans, with my hand relaxed & stretched over both spans.

The black line in the pics is just to see my joint more easily.

Please comment, i think my new span is a little over 1/8" too long.

Ill tell you that your old relaxed span looked good to me, and its hard to tell if the fit itself was good, but the span was good. Looking at the new ball with its relaxed span, its a little stretched, but not bad. Ive seen so much worse and if someone came into my shop with a span like that i wouldnt try to talk them into a shorter span. If you feel uncomfortable, then go back to a shorter span.

well, i dont feel uncomfortable at all when holding either ball, although, i DO feel like i have to grab the ball with the old span, the newer span allows me to stay more relaxed.  My main problem is that i have MAJOR wrist pain.

I took 6 years off from bowling, got back into it about 6 months ago.  Im bowling fairly well, 207 average in a non walled center.  Before i quit 6 years ago, i had slight wrist pain that started back when i hyper extended my wrist bowling a regionals 1 year, it never got much better.  Ever since the first or 2nd week of league when i started back, ive had horrible wrist pain, sometimes so bad that after bowling, i can barely move my wrist at all.

I cant seem to figure out what the problem is.  Ive tried wrist supports, changing my pitch, lengthening & shortening spans, even tried a 14lb ball. Ive also stopped cupping my wrist, i now keep it flat, & ive untucked my pinky thinking that could possibly be a problem as well.  NOTHING helps at all.  The only thing that seems to do any good is a really tight wrist support(the ace bandage type) when i bowl.

The only thing i can think of is that after not really using my wrist for 6 years, all the main muscles have worn down, & now all the stress is going str8 to my tendons.

Ill be going to academy or something to get a couple different wrist excersizers tomorrow, hopefully after a few weeks of using them when im not busy with something, it will help out a bit.

Thanks for your input.  Im considering dropping at least 1/16" off the span just to be safe.

I had a similar problem a little over a year ago.  I was 23 at the time, using a ball that was drilled for me at age 17.  Needless to say, my hand had grown a little bit during that time.  I had gotten into the habit of bending my wrist to a sharp angle, which caused problems when I started using the ball with the lengthened span.  I tweaked something in my wrist, and it hurt for about 3 months.

I don't know how you're holding the ball when you throw it, but maybe you're having the same trouble I was.  If so, you just need to ease up on cupping your wrist until you get used to the new span.
