What’s the signs?
-
With today's dynamic cores it can be tough to tell from watching ball rotation Best way to tell is reaction in pocket. Most flat 10s result from balls burning off too much energy. Most pocket 7-10s result from balls burning off too much rotational energy.

In the short term (bowling night) I like to watch where my ball exits the deck. Is it splitting the 8-9, finishing really strong (solidly covering the eight), or deflecting (solidly covering the nine) [righty]. Takes some discipline to avoid watching the pins, but is worth it.
This at least tells you what kind of roll you are getting, but not why. And if your ball is deflecting more than normal but carrying, so be it.
In the longer term, assuming that your house puts down a consistent shot, if you suspect the ball is burning up, the next time you bowl change the surface to something less aggressive and see if it shapes up. Or do this right after league if you can. If it reacts better with less surface, it may have been burning up.

Generally speaking , most league bowlers on house shots are going to be way prone to burn unless they are speed dominant. The majority of bowlers in this category are not going to benefit enough from going to less surface. The reason is that all resin balls read the dry do fast coming off the end oil that they go from skid to burnout very quickly.

Good explanation guys.

Thanks for the replies! Much appreciated!!!!!

We have wet-dry house shot here that I'm struggling with after transition. Early, I can stay close to dry and let ball bleed energy and still have good entry angle due to coming from far outside. Even if it does burn up, it doesn't really matter. Similar to short pattern with urethane even though this is 40 ft in length. Outside 5 isn't nearly that long.
However, this house dries out quickly and that look barely lasts through 1st game. After that, the dry is close to 10 board, so early hook doesn't have much entry angle from there. Moving in, I run into a flood of oil.
When I play straight and close to oil line, I feel like my ball burns up if I miss right, but skids too far if I miss in. Gets confusing in that ball basically does same thing at pins by deflecting way too much. I wouldn't even try this, but this straight line works amazingly well sometimes. I just can't figure out how to replicate it consistently. It's struggle for 600 or pretty easy 700.
Highest averages in house are lefties, followed by big handed righties that get way left and bounce off dry. Most righties have the up and down games within same set as they fight transition.

Avabob: So if less surface isn't a good option, are you saying that a different ball is the best option? (higher rg? smaller differential ratio?)
-
No. I am saying that your release in terms of ball speed and axis rotation needs to be examined. Most league bowlers try to hook the ball too much. The more boards you cover the more the ball slows down, the earlier the burn.
-
Ahhh... "the more boards you cover" is not my "A" game. I wasn't thinking in those terms.

If it says Kingpin on the side.
