how to throw straight ball?
« on: November 26, 2008, 07:41:54 AM »
any links to instructional sites.  i have tried the ice storm and am currently using the blue dot.  i practice different lines and can consistently whiff within 1/2 inch, the ball trajectory is straight until the last second, then the built-in collision avoidance kicks in.  for some reason i am never comfortable trying to come up the back of the ball, i have gone to reverse pitch in the thumb and i am still not able to stay behind and roll the ball end over end.  i can maintain a suitcase grip through out the delivery and the ball has the least break but it still breaks off the 10 pin every time.

moving deeper so the ball stays in the oil in the middle longer?

i've always been taught to keep my thumb pointed straight up at the cieling all throughout the shot. the whole entire way straight through the follow through. mix that with picking my speed up a little bit, and it goes straight as an arrow every time.

Move the index finger next to the middle finger and then spread the little finger out.  This makes the ball go end over end.

you could just use your thumb ala billy oatman.

ill work under a set of assumptions.  you are aiming 10 pins if righty?  you could stand in the same spot and move your target one board right to account for that small amount of curve.  really that can be used for any spares that you are hooking by.

Here's how I do it:  spread index finger as far away from the MF as possible, rotate ball until the weight is mostly on the spread index finger, then keep it there throughout the swing and release.  My thought is thumb straight toward the target, then hit the third arrow (or whatever target you're using).  --  JohnP

This is different but it works. I'm right handed, put my thumb down at 7:00 and fingers up at 1:00, release soft w/ some reverse rotation. Ball goes dead straight most of the way then turns over a couple times. Usually hooks 2-4 boards at very end. Started this about 2 mo's ago, have not missed a 10 pin, 6-10, or baby split since. Best to use a dark solid colored ball as rotation looks horrible going down the lane, but can't argue w/ success. I don't carry a spare ball anymore.

thanks all for the input, there are a couple i intend trying immediately, rolling off the index finger and the thumb only (billy oatman) although i am not sure i can hold onto the ball with just my thumb...we will see, again thanks for the input.

And I thought I invented that technique.

If you want to try the Oatman technique, fingerless, and use reverse thumb pitch, try turning the ball around backwards essentially creating forward thumb pitch - makes it easier to keep from dropping it.  I tried this and could do fairly well, but settled on the other style because I was more accurate.  --  JohnP

Or you could just break your wrist. If you keep your speed up and do rotate around at all you will get a spinner release at worst and can maybe stay behind it better to keep it straight.
