Help me improve my swing and revrate
« on: June 22, 2009, 02:25:07 PM »
Hi

I just don't understand how to get a free swing and rev rate up. I try many things but it never feels right.  It always feels off causing many problems.

Here's a vid of me from behind and I'm sure you'll understand what I mean:

As you can see my swing plane is off and I come around the ball.  How do I fix these two things?  For the release, I know how to cup and cock my wrist but I don't know how to unload it.  For the free swing, I'm just lost.  I don't know what to feel.

I hoping for some decent advice thanks.

I'd say: start with your timing. You start moving with your feet well before you start the pushaway, and this phenomenon is an issue all the way until you recah the foul line. You do not have a slide, you are already standing there, waiting for the ball. Even though your delivery does not look hurried, I bet that this synchronisity problem causes you to "force" the pendulum, which results in a weak delivery - because you hang onto the ball too long, which causes you to come around it more than wanted. That's what I'd say from this single shot video.

My advice: try to synchronise the pushaway and the inital step. It is not much of a difference, but you should try to have a sliding foot just a moment before the ball arrives in the pendulum's lowest point at the forward swing, where you should release it. In fact, it is a split second delay of the swing, and let its momentum dictate the stance of your feet, not vice versa. Relax and let gravity rule

Thanks dizzy for your advice. A couple of questions:

1.  How do you create a slide step?  Is there a way to use my slide foot so that I can create a slide?

2.  How do I use gravity properly in my swing?  I limp my arm in my swing but that does nothing.  My swing still feels heavy and slow.

3.  I'm still confused about the release.  If I try cupping, slightly cocking my wrist while index finger is spread and release it with my palm facing forward, the ball goes slightly straight with as much revs as me using a brace, ie. not much.  Yet when the pros do it, they get all sorts of power and revs.  What to they do just before the release to get the that?

Absolutely and 100% incorrect with that statement. There is nothing wrong with 4 steps if you know what you are doing much less then 5 or 6 steps.

The problem is easy to fix but will take practice. You need to get the ball when you move your right foot forward close to the same time to get the ball earlier and you will get better leverage. Prime examples are to search for videos on pros Sean Rash and Parker Bohn III and you will understand.

Another big thing is you need to get your hand/wrist on the inside of the ball.  You chicken wing it pretty bad...which makes revrate impossible.

I have tried to free my arm swing up which seems to by nature add a couple of revs. With a free arm swing I tend not to grab the ball. I spend a lot of time lifting weights so I tend to muscle the ball. I just tell myself to stay behind the ball and have a free arm swing. If I mentally tell myself that, it works.

You don't know how many times people have told me this.  The problem is if I do that, everything gets thrown off and I get no leverage as a result.  The best way I can describe it is that by my third step, i feel the ball is like past my ankle and is in front of me by the time I complete my last step.
