How would you improve the center you bowl in?
« on: October 03, 2003, 06:58:47 AM »
Lets say the owner of your favorite bowling alley put out a form for every league bowler to fill out.  On this form it stated that he had some money to spend on improving the center, but you could only choose ONE THING to change/add/improve.  What change would you make?

For me, my largest pet peeve are the snack bars.  I'd tell him to put in a grill and deep fryer and learn how to cook the best Greasy Cheeseburgers and Suzy Q's in town.  I'd spend another $5-10 per night if I could go in there early and get a decent meal before the league started.  In fact, if they did it right I'd show up on the nights I didn't bowl just to eat and BS with the owner and other bowlers.

Higher topless strippers to serve drinks on the lanes and put a pole between every 6-10 lanes  Then have lap dances for everyone waiting to bowl.

I bet you could charge 50 bucks a night to bowl and the house would be packed.

You could have men's night, ladies night and regular open play for the prudes.

Sweet! Good thinkin' Doc!

I'd have to change my name to "SOLID 9" in your place! LOL.

Doc either your lying about where our from and I told you my idea this past Wed. nite or we are twin brothers from different mothers... Anyways its still my idea...lol. Also, since all bowling alleys have good mozzerella sticks (speak from experience) I would say I would like to see better A/C or ceiling fans that got as many revs as my Grandma.

Wow - is it really that bad?  I see you bowl 6 leagues a week - if they are all at this house, you must be a glutton for punishment!

I bowl league in two different houses.  In the older house I would like to see better seating.  We are so crowded it is unbelieveable and it doesn't help that everyone brings 8 balls to league.

The other house I bowl in I also work in.  I would love to see a better proshop.  What I mean by that is more variety and better selection.  We only carry columbia scouts and a few morich high perf balls, thats it.  Most of the employees are very knowledgeable and helpful to all customers concerning proshop sales.  However, if someone comes in and wants a particular ball that we obviously don't have, we have to order.  Most bowlers like regular people are compulsive.  They want it right now, so they go off base to buy the ball they want b/c he stocks it.  I can't complain to much b/c I do the same thing.

I would opt that the league coordinator allow for a vote as to thye type of condition/shot that is laid out for each league.  They pick the shot, and it is usally what the proshop guy can shoot, or the favorite house bowlers who are buds with the mechanic.  Other than the desire to try tougher shots, everything is fine.

As a junior bowler who takes part in a 9am league on Saturday, I'd say go talk to starbucks about setting up at the alley. I want some decent coffee and breakfast food, not the AMF crap.

Other than that, I'd say to get rid of the MASSIVE ob that we have. Whoever put down this pattern is either trying to create a sportshot themselves, or they just really hate the league bowlers.

One thing would not cure the problems that our house has.  There are many, but fixing the machines and scoring would be first.  I would like to see the overall appearance of the house change.  Ceiling tiles, carpet, the plumbing problems all need to be fixed.  The building sags in the middle and the parking lot when it rains is called lake AMF.

Hire some staff people who give a crap, and aren't just there to collect a paycheck for sitting around.

That's AMF for ya!!! Although there are some that are decent, they are in the minority.

How to improve my house--probably overhaul the pinsetters and scorers or replace them. Also spot-cleaning the carpet wouldn't hurt either(year-old glow carpet, and a good-sized black stain behind one pair for example)

I bowl in 2 different centers.  In one center, I would suggest they ditch the pinspotters and buy totally new machines.  We can't seem to go more than 15-20 frames on a 5 man squad without something busting.  After that they might actually try to have some knowledgeable staff members.  I work for the AMF center I bowl in on Mondays.  I know the drill.  I know how things work.  I've gone to my Thursday night center and they didn't know things like:  AMF employees get employee rates no matter what AMF house they're in; how to look at a game on the computer after it has been bowled; how to cycle pins from the desk.  Simple things...how in the world can they not know the easiest things in the world?  I think they employ 1 bowler on staff, excluding the manager.  That is sad, IMO.

Sawbones:  you beat me to it.  IMO, the only way to really save the aforementioned center is a good fire and a better insurance policy.
