how would you play a dry/wet shot?
« on: January 17, 2005, 11:29:33 AM »
it seems the shot at the two houses I bowl in has been a light oil up front with medium /heavy oil in the mids and back.for me any ball with surface won't clear the heads and shiny stuff doesn't carry to well.I've worked on mostly being very accurate with the weak balls and making the ten pins with decent results but I wanted to hear some other opinions such as equipment, release etc.
The harder I try the harder they fall

What drill options have you tried?  Surface is only one part of the equation...

Many schools of thoughts on this... but any of them boil down to what you can execute the best.

I personally like to use more aggressive shells with less agressive layouts, try to stay behind the ball to get more up and down roll... and square my shoulders to the pocket (playing a "fall back" shot of the 80's). My only concern is when the ball picks up its roll. When it starts to pick up early... I move in a little ... play the same break point but start to come around it a little to open the shot up.

But, other successfull players loft the heads (ala mika) or "push" the ball through the heads (with the palm of the bowling hand ... ala Robert Smith this past sunday when he moved right in the last match).

pin up,low flair, light load particle ball or strong arcing rective. take your hand out of the ball. go up the oil line. adjust surafces to match your speed and release.

most can not swing through backend oil. straighter is greater. the idea is to delay the transition from skid to hook until you clear the heads and then some. if you can get a med strong particle to skid by hand postions the shell will take over in the mid/backend slop.

a ball like the big Kahuna, phenom unleased, rule etc can work.

personally I like to fluff a particel ball and trust it. sloppy lanes do not take me out of play. I do that all by myself

best reactions for me have been with a polished hot wire drilled 1:30 layout and a sling blade drilled neg. pin above fingers c.g. in grip. I fire the hot wire up the boards and when the track burns in or I burn out I play the sling but I have to watch the speed, not too fast, not too slow.so far I see these as my only options as I don't loft the ball very well but I did pick up an intense inferno and drilled with a 2L or 5 by 5.I haven't tried it yet at my two houses but I did try it out and I liked the reaction.I'll know tomorrow.
