How would you play on this pattern?
« on: October 22, 2008, 11:53:00 PM »
Im going to a big tournament next weekend, the oil pattern looks like this: http://www.bowlingarenan.se/popen/2008/oljeprofil2008.pdf

Im gonna bring 4 or 5 balls with me.

Unsure:
Speed Deamon
Seek and destroy
Richochet Rush

In the bag:
XXX-Factor
Creature Pearl
Spare ball

Im unsure about the first 3 balls. I dont know wich one to pick. The Demon is weak, could be good when the lanes starts to change, the S&D is proabably too strong and the Rush is very flippy.

If i bring the exact same balls will i get the same scores as you?  Get my point?  It is the indian more than the arrow....

The shot looks short and less side to side difference than a typical house shot.  Play more direct outside 8 (8-5 area) and burn it in and move in.  The insides will probably hook more than your normal house shot as their is less hold in the middle

Good volume with 21ml, but not overly long. You have an oil ridge down 5th board that you can exploit - I'd try a down-and-in shot in that area, the XXX factor sounds good to me, it should have good recovery from that outside line.
Playing deeper is IMHO also possible, but due to the flat pattern you will not be able to swing it. With only 1 dry board near the gutter you better keep the ball's line quite in parallel to the boards. Too steep, and the ball will not recover and end in the gutter.

The S&D on a deeper but tight line, between 2nd and 3rd arrow, could also be an option. But I think you'd have to have a more keen eye on the ball's reaction, and I am not sure if it is as easy to control as the down-5 line?

Just my 2 cents

If you knew the lane surface it would give you a better idea what to bring.

for me, i'd probably need something with a 1" pin or a urethan ball... and as above, get your feet right!

Target the 5 board as your breakpoint.

You should be able to start out with a breakpoint somewhere around 5-8 depending on lane surface. If the field (other players) breaks them down close to the same way, another zone could develop. This other zone would not be there until around game 5,6,7,8 and it is dependant on surface also. This other zone would be about an arrow left and would be feeding the ball to the right deeper down the lane.

If it is wood, you may get pushed into the "second" zone after a game or two especially if everyone is beating the gutter up.

Ball choices should be on the smoother, arcing side. If you get on a slick surface like pro anvilane, particle might be really good. This might be a good place to take your S&D with a smooth surface on it like 4000 or 2000 depending on your ball speed. When you get forced further left, still think smooth as you do not want the ball snapping up going away from the pocket. If they are really starting to move, your weaker Speed Demon might just fit the bill.

Good luck and let us know how this played out as the graph looks challenging especially with the flatter ratios side to side.

Dito. Looks like a tough one that does not allow much errors. Rather play "small" on it despite its medium length.

Don't go into the event with any preconceived notions.  Others have posted good ideas here, but play the lanes the way they need to be played.

Depending on the condition of the surface and the viscosity of the conditioner in use, carry down could become a major factor or even be a non-entity. With the pattern being so flat, you'll do well to keep a close eye on where others are playing and how the lanes transition.

if in the case u have clean backend, use something strong like the xxx factor and swing out having ur breakpoint around 5 so u have some good entry angle to carry

as the games goes, u might have to move right, use something weaker, hard and firm to the headpin

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Over a few games it will depend on the surface.  However shorter flatter patterns usually start good from further outside, if you can play up the boards and not belly toward the gutter.  I like low flare drillings and mild, but not shiny surfaces out of the gate.

+1

The pattern seems to resemble the Viper...which generally starts out and moves in dramatically after a few games.

UPDATE: I didn't make the cut. This patten was one of the most difficult patterns I've ever played on. You had to make a perfect shot to get a strike, if you missed it to far to the right the ball just slide, and if you pulled it a little left you went high on the headpin. The only one that actually did some decent numbers where the ones throwing it straight with low revs and high hcp.
The cut was 1224, and there was totally over 140 players and over 100+ re-entrys.
