Um....Our shot has changed...so has my carry....
« on: May 03, 2007, 12:12:17 PM »
Title says it all.  Usually at my house i play a little further right than i would like, lay ball down around 17-18 crossing 14 at arrows and scoring consistently over 230-240.  2 weeks ago we got a new stripper or something and the back part of the lanes are much much stronger.  Now ive been laying the ball down around 22-23 crossing 16-17 with the same ball, wrap ten every time.  Can't seem to break 690, i'll shoot 220,220,230-whatever.  I thought it might have been just that week, but it was this week too.  The lefties don't seem to have any problems, but i'm getting frustrated.  I try playing back at 14 and i go through the face, speed the ball up, another wrap ten or 2-10.  I like the ball roll much better with the stronger back end, but i'll throw 2-3 in a row, bam wrap 10 or stone 7.  No nines or eights, just the corners.  Can't seem to get the big strings going now.  I'm using a pin under vapor zone, 2000 abralon+ruff buff.  I only take it and a spare ball. Should i change to a weaker ball and move right, or use a stonger ball with a weaker drill.  Any insight needed....

Key phrase:the back part of the lanes are much much stronger

The ball your using is to strong thats all. Its wrapping the 10pin cause its comin in to hard, go weaker.

Well, averaging as you are, I'm sure you'll figure it out.
Since you asked, if it were me, I would try a different ball with pin over bridge & a shinier surface. I would inch back toward your original line & see if you get the pocket & your carry back.

If the ball is snapping too hard and if you move inside and leaving 2-10s, and moving outside makes the ball hook too early, you are describing an over/under condition.

What makes an over/under condition is the ball hits the break point with too much side rotation making it over snap.

To combat this you either need to use less side rotation in your release, or a ball with more surface that allows it to burn more energy before it hits, or both. Sometimes this involves moving outside and throwing the ball hard and straight with an agressive ball.

In your case I would take a scotchbrite pad and dull up your vapor zone take it down to 800 with a gold or grey pad. If the lanes break down, leave the vapor zone alone and bring another ball, you don't have your arsenal listed in your profile, so I don't know what to recommend.

Experiment with different hand positions and try to go straighter.

I was bowling with a gold certified coach last week (not during a lesson, just fun) and he was showing me how 10 pins are left. He can throw them on purpose, ride the 1 board all the way to the 10 pin, things like that. I left that night feeling like a true hack, heh.

He has me working on a few things, but one thing he reinforced (which you seem to be half way there) is to only take and use one ball to league along with a plastic. He's in the camp that feels a truly good bowler can make any ball roll any way by changing the position of the hand and ball speed. Sure, you're more than welcome to match up to a shot by changing the characteristics of a ball and throwing the same old release, but at what point does it become irrelevant?

Anyone can learn to average 200+ on a house shot by swinging the ball out and playing the free hook, and that's fine if all you're interested in is having fun in league and scoring high. Nothing wrong with that.

If you want to take the game to the next level and cash in tournaments with tough patterns, learn to throw it straighter and manipulate your hand and ball speed.

I'm not as good as you are, so take this advice straight from this coach if you want. I'm just rehashing what he told me.
