Inserts or no inserts.
« on: February 25, 2005, 07:42:14 AM »
I've been bowling for close to 16 years.  A few honor scores, a consistent low 200+ average.  Yadda yah.  My PSG (pro shop guy) asked me why I didn't use finger inserts in any of my equipment and really didn't have an answer other than personal preference.

What are the pros/cons of using inserts?

Most ball drillers push inserts because they bring you back into the shop. Pro's for you are they softer on your fingers and probably will give you more lift. Cons are they wear out, pull out and is just one more thing to go wrong. I had them, now I don't. I personally like the strong feeling of the ball against my finger rather than the soft feeling of the inserts. I liked them when they were new, but I quickly wore them out and made them sloppy. It's only preference.

OH MY GOD! This literally has to be the 5th (at least) post about this. Ok, here we go: Pros for grips: for some people its more comfortable, pitches dont need to be as precise, helps some people get more revs, look pretty. Cons: they make some people have an inconsistent release, makes some people hang up in the ball

No grips: pros:cleaner release, can feel your pitches more, dont have to worry about replacing grips, or them falling out, more consistency. Cons: have to be very precise with pitches, or they hurt, you have to get calluses on your fingers because no grips hurts at first, cant simply switch out grips to try new stuff, gotta plug the ball. I think thats just about all of them.

Maybe I'm weird, but I find I get a cleaner release WITH grips...they make me A LOT smoother.

I'm almost the same way, I notice no difference between the way I come out with grips or no grips, exept with grips I can jam my fingers in tighter/use tighter holes without them hurting.

It all depends on the bowler.  Oh God, if i tried bowling with grips again, that ball would literally fly straight up in the air.  Grips hated me and i disliked them severely as well.

It's all about preference.  BTW, your pro shop guy just wants you to spend more money.  That's it.

Kinda funny here, but my proshop guy actually promotes people don't use grips! He thinks its a pain to have to replace them for customers all the time, and that the profit margin isn't as big as some people think (he charges 6 dollars for grips)
