3rd frame of 2nd game I tripped a bit over my own feet, and aborted the delivery mid swing. Somehow, in clamping down with my grip to not release it, I seriously pulled the tendons/muscle in my ring and middle finger - felt it all the way up to my elbow. Bowled out with my spare ball playing slow up 9 board, getting just enough turn with my thumb as my fingers would NOT support any lift from them (kinda felt like Roy Munson bowling with that prosthetic hand lol) and wound up doing really well, but that's beside the point. Today they both hurt, up through the palm of my hand anytime I even slightly squeeze anything.
Sucks, I was just starting to get my game back into decent shape. Fortunately, league is off next week so I have 14 days to rest and recover.
Just hope that's long enough...

Based on your description, it will probably be a whole lot more than 14 days before you can bowl again.
Get it checked out and don't screw yourself up more by bowling before you should. Good luck.
-
+1....get it checked by a doctor. It might cost you a visit but that's cheaper than furthering the injury and not being able to bowl for a full year or requiring surgery. Get it looked at...than do what the doctor says.

Sounds like an injury my buddy had in September. He's about ready to bowl again after all this time off.
-
9, that sounds more serious than just 14 days worth. If it was me, I would see my Dr. as quickly as possible. Hope it isn't as serious as it sounds.

Yea, it sounds like you have a serious injury.
If it was me, I would use this as an opportunity to learn to bowl with the other hand. I have had two bowling buddies do just that.
Just think of the money you can make in the local handicap tournaments and brackets! You already know "how" to bowl, it just becomes a matter of muscle memory from the other side.

I have had this injury happen to me atleast twice, Give it plenty time to heal, if you dont it will just happen all over again. The first time it happend i couldnt even open a door with my right hand. Time is your best solution, do as little with your hand as possible.

I actually did the same thing a few years back and I took half the season off tore the legiments almost broke it. I wouldnt rush getting back in it just going to reinjury it.

Like everyone is saying get it check out. Honestly there is not much they are going to be able to do for you unless it needs surgery. Sounds like a bad pull maybe a tear. Most likely it is in the muscle if it is a tear. In the short term, avoid using it and try to immobilize the fingers. Splints will do the best but it will be bulky and look ridiculous. As far as handling that injury if it is as fresh as it sounds you will want to ice it. Both in the hand and the arm. Then start treating it with heat. Icy hot patches would not be a bad idea. And as ridiculous as this sound try to up your intake of protein and water. They will both help speed healing. I have seen and had a lot of injuries like this as a martial artist. Thats the way we treat them.

I've done this. Ball didn't exit cleanly and got stuck at my middle finger. I couldn't make a fist with it for almost a month. I couldn't bowl for several weeks.

sounds like what dealing with. But mine happend from trying to keep the ball from going behind me after getting slugs for the thumbs (was death gripping the ball.
can throw older/longer spanned equip (without vynal slugs) without pain but once i try to throw those with the slugs if i don't death grip then it tends to fall off hand during backswing (even with texture tap in front/behind)
but do go get checked i had to take 5 wks off of bowling with that hand. Darn doc didn't give me anything good tho.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Being a stubborn male, I am inclined to think I can tough it out and give it a try in a couple weeks, although I'm certain it won't be ready by then. I've strained this area before, but not this bad - and those took more than a couple weeks to completely get over, so I'm sure this one will take a while. Although the good news is, I'm not feeling pain in my forearm today like I was last night. I won't rule out the Dr. visit, but being Christmas and all, it'll give me a couple of days to see if it's going to start improving on its own. I don't think it's worth an ER visit, and the office is closed until at least Monday.
I'll start the ice and heat methods as well. Thanks for that tip!
As for the switching hands, I've actually been considering that even before hurting myself. Sounds like a good reason to go ahead and give it a go!
Oh, and LMAO about the Super Duty velcro mittens! Guys on my team were already making comments about how my left hand will be the "new fling" in the bedroom. They're so sympathetic!

Well, it has responded well to the ice/heat method. I'm getting a little strength back into the fingers (can grip the toothbrush fairly well now), and can *slowly* make a fist without pain. Sudden squeezes hurt and if I try to squeeze with moderate pressure it hurts, but slow movements and light pressure doesn't bother it now. The pain between my wrist up through the palm of my hand has subsided. Any time I feel pain now it is in the fingers between the knuckle at the palm of my hand and first knuckle up. I'd say the majority of discomfort is right around that joint where the finger meets the hand.

Sounds like a sprain. If you can do it with out terrible pain it would be beneficial to very lightly stretch those fingers but if it causes a lot of pain don't do it. Only stretch to the slightest of tension right now. That will just help get things a little looser. If it is the case that you can not stretch at all(and if in doubt don't stretch yet) it will help relieve pressure to lightly pull straight out on the fingers. It sounds weird I know but it is another thing that we have always done in martial arts and it has always worked. Just 2 weeks ago I had a sprain of my little finger while sparring and while it is still not 100% I did not miss any bowling from it following these tips.

You said earlier, "Being a stubborn male, I am inclined to think I can tough it out and give it a try in a couple weeks, although I''m certain it won''t be ready by then. I''ve strained this area before, but not this bad - and those took more than a couple weeks to completely get over, so I''m sure this one will take a while."
Now, being assured of that, why would you CHOOSE to rush it back? Have the mental strength to resist the "stubborn-ness" and make a good CHOICE. Following the impulsivity and falling for the stubborn way is just being mentally weak. Don''t be ignorant when it comes to dealing with issues of your health, what bowling gives you isn''t worth it.

Locke - I can stretch the fingers lightly without pain. Actually feels pretty good after a little stretch. I first pulled the fingers straight out, gently as you said, and my ring finger popped (a chiropractor would say it "adjusted")! I hardly touched it and it did that... Didn't hurt though, so that's good.
Good Times - I have a ball in my closet that I'm getting ready to take in and have holes put in for the left hand. Wife shot down my idea of building a complete lefty arsenal though...

That sounds good that seems like it may have actually meant you slightly dislocated that ring finger. Even though it did not hurt I would ice that knuckle to avoid it swelling and causing problems with healing.
