So I've been wondering why my Hy-Road won't hook as much as my tropical Breeze. Both are OOB finish at 1500 polish. Hy-Road has a stronger layout. I just bought the Hy-Road and this was the second time I've used it. My Tropical Breeze I've had for a good 9 months. My Tropical Breeze is about 6-8 boards stronger than my Hy-Road, can't figure out why that is the case... Ball hasn't died as it is brand new... Any thoughts?

Resins are different from old urethanes balls.
Stronger balls like the Hy-Road need oil to perform properly. If there's not enough oil, they tend to use up their energy ("burn up") in the heads and the midlane. They have little left for hooking and hitting power is generally greatly diminished.
Weaker balls like the Trop. Breeze needs less oil to perform. It will clear the heads and midlane much better and save plenty of energy, even on light oil
Resin balls are generally talked about in terms of hooking power but that is wrong because it gives a false impression as you have learned with your two balls. They should be rated in terms of oil handling ability. People often confuse the two abilities; this is a left-over idea from the urethane days where balls were rated most of the time, by the amount they hooked. The more they hooked, the more oil they were able to handle. Again, this is not necessarily true for resin balls.
A ball's ability to hook is ONLY relative when it is used on the proper amount of oil they need to retain energy at the breakpoint. A ball only has the energy that the bowler applied with his release via ball speed and rev rate; a ball will never gain any more energy once it is released. It can only lose energy. How much it loses, as it rolls down the lane and when it hooks, determines how strongly it will hit the pins.

Thanks for the help and great explanation. However I'm certain the there was enough oil and the ball wasn't depleting most of its energy too soon. I was able to use a Haywire and Salute on that same day. Could there be any other causes?

Pattern with low volume?

It's oil soaked and needs to have its surface redone from the beginning.
If so, sand it to 500 grit, put it through the oil extraction process of your choice, then refinish the surface to your liking.

I have seen people with certain roll on the ball really hate the hyroad...and there is literally no payoff on the backend.
-
Don't think it needs to be de-oiled lol. Just punched it up last month and only has 3 games on it...
-
could you tell us how the hyroad and tropical are laid out and some of your stats. like billdozer said some people with the way they roll havent had success with the hyroad i had 1 myself and absolutely hated it i just never matched up to it even with surface and drilling changes but i love my tropical heat pearl and hybrid different strokes for different folks

If it's none of the above, then the only other thing that comes to mind is that it's drilled wrong for you, but that wouldn't make it not hook at all. It would usually reduce the best hook you can get from it. I find it hard to believe it would hook less than a Trop. Breeze. The Hy-Road is at least 2 steps stronger than the TB. The Haywire you have should be a step above or stronger than the HR,in the other direction.
Maybe someone else has an idea.

I'm thinking bad layout along and/or surface prep. Is there any way a picture of the Hy-Road's layout can be posted, along with the bowler stats?
-
I am one that hates the Hyroad. I don't think the core and I were a good match. Mine was a dart down the lane unless I took surface way way down (500). I had a nomad solid which I still have and a dark star at the time. The nomad was 10 boards stronger on fresh medium oil and dark star was 5-7. Everybody thought I was nuts. Lol. I know the cover works for me as the Lights Out is one of my favorite balls ever.
I had drilled all 3 balls the same back then. 4 inch pin to pap and pin slightly above. Didn't do dual angles then.

IMO the HyRoad is a better ball for someone with high revs, that's why so many of the pro's use it. I'd take it way down in surface, maybe 400 grit or even 250, then go back up if needed. -- JohnP
-
JohnP you got it right I know three bowlers that have high rev rate that loves the HyRoad one bought an case of them me and my double parnter had so-so sucess with it and very little back end motion.
-
I am also a lower rev guy who didn't like the hyroad. However it wasn't so much about lack of hook, but rather losing too much energy off the break point to hit good. Just not a good core shell matchup for me.
-
I'm rev dominate and I love the hyroad. Ez ten board stronger than my breeze. I left mine out of the box surface and it was comparable to the byte.

Just resolved the issue. Being a two-hander I only use the finger holes... The grips on my Hy-road were a bit slimy and caused my release to be different. It caused me to track on the finger holes and made the ball hydroplane as it doesn't have proper traction with the lane. Got new grips, all good now.
-
You said the HR was brand new. How did the grips get so slimy they had to be replaced? Couldn't you have just cleaned them with acetone? -- JohnP
-
I don't know, the guy ran out of grips that I wanted, he only had vise. Nothing against vise inserts, but all the other balls have turbo, want to have a consistent feel from ball to ball. He had some old ones that I used just temporarily until I got the new ones. Anyways, problem resolved so no big hassle.
