Inspired by another thread.. Lane Courtesy
« on: April 28, 2005, 12:20:11 PM »
I know EVERYONE has a different opinion on lane courtesy.  Whether it's open bowling or league night, someone always seems to ignore it.

Personally, every league I've been on has a 1-lane courtesy mandatory.  We tried the 2-lane but that extended the league time by almost an hour.

My approach.  Before I even grab my ball I look to the left and right.  If someone is on a spare, I let them bowl first.  If someone is on a SPLIT, I definitely let them bowl first.  If I'm on the approach and someone steps up next to me, I'll put my ball down and wait for them to roll.  But I tell them afterward to not step up on the approach while someone is getting ready to roll.  If someone is taking it off the sheet or has strikes through 9, then he/she gets practically the entire house courtesy.

For myself, I don't care at all about lane courtesy.  But I'll give others lane courtesy, on either side of me. But I don't care if someone comes running up screaming when I'm in my approach, since I've had to deal with that in open bowling enough.

I started a rant on this a few months back and got blasted by those who proclaimed to be "tournament only" bolwers.  Well, Topps hasn't come out with my rookie card yet, I'bowled in a few regionals and college tourneys, one lane is more than enough for this mere mortal.

One lane each side.

During open bowling I don't even worry about. I expect it to happen. In league it's one lane.

I've always been fine with one lane courtesy, although I know there are certain tournaments that I bowl that have 2 lane courtesy and I abide by that rule if it's in place.

And if someone has a string of 9-10 strikes going and is bowling within a pair of me for that 300, I will let them go and bowl before I get on the approach. I've practiced on lanes with cosmic bowling going on, birthday parties, no lane courtesy- just to improve my mental focus so that when faced with pressure situations I work on staying within my game.

During open bowling I'm used to bowling with distractions and discourteous bowlers.

Although I had bowling next to little kids.  One kid ran straight behind me during my backswing and THUMP.  The little bugger slid into the ball return and started screaming like a stuck banshee pig.  I felt so bad but it wasn't my fault.

We do one-lane in all the leagues I bowl on.  One is a mixed, fun league with mostly non-serious bowlers.  We never have a problem with non-serious people not understanding lane courtesy.  We do bowl next to a college league and have had some problems with it but it doesn't take too long to educate them.

The other league is a mens' league that's about as serious as leagues get around here (which isn't that serious).  Again, no problems with lane courtesy.

We do give plenty of leeway for splits (and the rare honor score).  There's no sense in bowling next to one (or two!), you're more likely to get one yourself or leave something on a good shot.  Big-Four to the left, 7-10 to the right?  I don't need that kind of mojo working against me.  My teammate doesn't even let the ball "see" the splits, she covers it with a towel until it's gone.

In my Sport league, we give 2 lane courtesy.  It's doubles, so time is not an issue.  In my other leagues it's usually 1 lane courtesy.  I will give two lanes to the left when I need to pick up a 10 pin because I stand so far left.

It depends who is bowling where.  Most of the guys in league are fine with One lane.  However, a few of them have to have 2-3 lanes either way and will practically get in a fight with you if you don't give it to them.  I'm fine with one

230 - I'm a tournament bowler.  1-lane is enough for me as well.  I don't really care too much if anyone jumps up on me either, as long as they don't try to physically knock me down or hit me.  Open bowling last year next to a group of 20-year-olds, according to someone bowling with me, I missed getting my skull caved in with a ball by about four inches by a guy on the next lane.  That was disturbing.

What does bother me, regardless of how many lanes the courtesy entails, is bowlers that don't step off the lane when they're not ready to bowl, and bowlers that give no indication at all whether they're ready to bowl or not.

I get this all the time on the fun league I bowl on.  If you're not ready to bowl, don't pick up your ball.  When I get the nod from the lane(s) next to me is when I pick up from the ball return.
