I personally like the Asylum better, Im one of the only ones who wasnt a fan of the Hyroad. To me the Hyroad, even with surface was too clean for fresh oil....I could only use it after lanes broke down and I was looking for a benchmark. I find the Asylum to handle fresh oil fine and have a heavier roll....hits like a truck...it tells me exactly what move to ake next, ball up or ball down, reads the lane great.

I live and swear by the Hy-Road. Definetly my favorite ball right now. However, I think the Asylum is a better benchmark especially on todays oil. The Hy-Road would need to be about 500/2000 to be about the same strrngth as the Asylum. Go with Roto Grip. I am thinking about the Asylum as well.

You should be in sales for Roto, you make me want to buy a few.

I agree with vkowalski.

It seems that the Asylum is stronger when compared to the Hyroad. If you're on the heavier side of medium go with the Asylum. If you're on the lighter side of medium and/or experience a lot of breakdown I'd go with the Hyroad

If you want a ball that will make you play a slower speed than you want to, and still not sure if you'll get over or under reaction, go with the Hy Road.  (just my experience with it).

The Asylum I have not heard a bad thing about yet, and I think you'll find that for some reason, Roto Grips hit just a little harder than most, including their sister Storm

The point somebody made earlier about the Hyroad being too clean is one of the best points to me in favor of getting the Asylum instead.  Hyroad either needs some surface or the track needs to burn a bit to smooth out the backend transition.  Haha, very rarely you'll say a ball being too clean is a problem, but it can be sometimes with the Hyroad on fresh conditions.

I am probably going to get an Asylum because it will refuce the over-and-under I saw with my Hy-Road.  Sometimes it just transitioned too hard after the oil. I've even seen a little wiggle from it. The Asylum will burn a little energy in the front and still hit hard through the pins. Good luck on your decision.

Went with the asylum, and don't regret it one bit. First game strung the first eight, with a ringing 10 in the ninth for 279. 40 foot ths.

I am going to dredge up this thread because I am about to make the same decision. I picked up a Hyroad last October and put a control layout on it in hopes of making it my benchmark ball. On fresh oil, the hyroad doesn't read the mids for me at box finish. I have tried it at 2000 and 3000 abralon but neither seemed to give me the look on the fresh I am looking for. 2000 seemed to burn off too much energy and 3000 was hit or miss at reading the midlane on fresh. My house doesn't usually have the cleanest backends, so I need a ball to get a good read in the mids to prevent over/under and spotty reactions. I am debating replacing my hyroad with an Asylum. From those who seem to have the same issues with the hyroad that I have, do you find the Asylum a better benchmark piece?

The problem with Hy Roads is that they are kind of in between for medium to low rev guys.  Too strong to play direct, but doesn't generate the kind of pop you can move in on.  I haven't thrown the asylum, but Storm guys told me it was very comparable to the Cobalt Vibe, which is a ball you can play more direct with.

I like the Marvel Pearl better than the HyRoad when I want to move in, and I like my Vibe to play more direct on fresh or strong back ends.

Though they are very close in overall hook the shape is different.  Asylum slows down quicker providing a smooth down lane motion with a slower response to friction so it's much better for me when I need to control the breakpoint with straighter angles.  Hyroad is a quick response ball for me and looks much better when the fronts are beat up requiring more angle through the front.  I've had 5 Hyroads over the years so one of my favorites and both are excellent choices as a step down from the IQ or Marvel lines.
