Help de-oiling using hot water
« on: October 13, 2006, 04:49:27 AM »
What is the best way to go about de-oiling a ball using hot water and some kind of cleaner/detergent?

Any help would be most appreciated.
I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

Why take the ball down to 400?  I've used hot water on 1500 grit balls and it seemed to work just fine.

I'm not really sure about the type/grit sandpaper I have,at the moment Im not really into sandpaper, tend to use a green scotchbrite if the surface needs dulling/taken down a bit.

Would it be ok to soak the ball in v.hot water such as tap water topped up with a few boiled Kettles full of water?

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

IMHO, surface adjustments are not necessary.  There's countless links on the site explaining the ease of oil extraction via hot water bathing.

DO NOT BOIL THE WATER!!!

Use the hottest tap water you can find.  You don't want to melt the ball, you want to clean it!

I agree with 230... do NOT boil the water. Just get your tap water running as hot as you can and throw in a couple squirts of Dawn dish soap.....that should be sufficient. I've done it with my Thing Returns and it's still working great after 300-350 games.

Thanks for the help people...... In regards to melting the ball,if thats the case how come I have heard about people "Baking" balls? Usually I apply a heat source to my stuff (Fan heater, hair dryer etc) and rotate the ball every few secs. This gets some of the oil out but wanted to know if there was a better and more energy efficient way of getting the oil out.

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

You don't need to resurface your ball while withdrawing oil unless you think it really needs it. Just put it under some tap water and dry it off. You don't need cleaners with it either. You can but you don't need to. I might use some degreaser after taking it out of the water and then use a cloth to wipe it off. Then after that I may polish it up. If it's too tracked up then I would resurface but that is rare.

Just to add one more thing.  Make sure you plug the holes in the ball not letting the water to get inside the holes.  This prevents the water from having access to the core of the ball.  This will also help in preventing any risk of core separation during the bathing process.

Soaking bowling balls is a pain in the butt and can be messy and tedious, so id recommend you bake your bowling ball... set your oven to a low temp 150-220 degrees. Then put your ball in on a pie tin or something that is sturdy metal if youd prefer, perhaps put a micro fiber towel or two in the bottem of the pan to make sure the ball sits snug.. Then let the ball sit in there for like 5 minutes+ and then check on it, it should have tons of sweat beads, pull out the ball and quickly wipe it off with some more micro fiber towels that you should have handy, then heres the part where you can do what you want at your own descretion. I personally put the ball right back in and repeat the process about 8-10 times and most all of the oil is out.., but i have heard things like of core detachment and all that crap, hasnt happend to the 2 balls ive done it too and they were both pearls so i dunno. Thennnnn If you truely want back OOB reaction get the ball resurfaced, but try it out before you do that to see if you like the reaction or whatnot.. Umm I never pulled the tape out of my ball or the finger grips lol and nothing has seemed to have happend, i used 170 degree heat.. nn yeah. good luck to ya, if you have any questions feel free to pm me.

...pain in the butt..??

...messy and tedious..??

Based on this information, am I to assume that you've never taken a bath or bathed an infant?  It's freakin' soap and water.  How tough is that?

and watch it crack wide open!
The thermostat in your home oven is not good enough to regulate the temperature at the 150 degree point. That is the theoretical point where resin starts to leach from the ball.

PLUS the core and the coverstock are two different materials; they heat and cool at different rates, which is what causes cracking!

EVERY manufacturer prohibits, warn against using a home oven. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!

Wow... messy and tedious to:
Fill tub with hot water
Squirt in soap
Set ball in water
Wait 1/2 hour... drink a beer
Drain water
Wipe down ball
Ummmm.... I'm not sure where this is messy or more tedious than repeating your wipedown process in an oven 8-10 times!!
Plus, putting your ball in the oven can heat the coverstock substantially more than the core which is what leads to core separations. It's the same reason you can burn your chicken on the outside and it'll still be uncooked in the middle....
Go with the hot tap water... you won't be disappointed....
