I averaged 279 when I bowled league...

So, today I'm at work.  Laundry needs to be done, so I grab one of my Brunswick Polos, and throw it on.  I go to make a color copy in our graphics section and the dude working in there, says....

"Brunswick?  You bowl?"

Me - "Yeah."

Him - "You any good?"

Me - "Decent."

Him - "What's your average?"

Me - "I booked 220 or something."

Him - "Really?  That's it?  I averaged 279 when I bowled league."

Me - "Really?  You might want to report that because you would own the high average record for the World."

Him - "Really?  Yeah, I used to throw a power ball right up the middle.  I would hit the pins so hard they would come flying out of the back."

Me - "Yeah."

Him - "If I threw a curve ball I would have to stand in the left gutter and throw it at the right gutter, so I just stuck with the straight ball."

Me - "Wow.  Versatile too."

Him - "I always wanted a clear ball with a skull in it."

Me - "Yep, they make those.  (inching towards the doorway) Well, gotta get back to work.  Later."

Sad, but this happens all the time.  Not too long ago, the lady at the front desk said her husband bowls just for fun and gets mad when he doesn't shoot a 300 game.  So I guess he's not a very happy guy in general.

I hear CRAP like that all the time.

Just this past Sunday my girlfriend and I were sitting in a bar. We were watching the college Championships on the TV. This guy asks "Do you bowl?"  He proceeds to tell us that he had to give it up at the age of 12. His mother gave him the choice of Bowling or football. Told us he should have stuck with bowling. At 12, (I would say in the mid 1970's) he says he averaged 195 and had lots of 285 games...................gotta love it.

I thought the World Record part would have thrown him off.  Nope, just kept chugging along.  I think I'm going to print out the PBA Membership application and just drop it off to him.  Suggest he inquire with them as to his chances of being successful with a 279 average throwing it straight.  Not a whole lot the PBA patterns are going to do to affect this guys scoring pace.  Watch out WRW jr...  Red ball up 20 is coming for you!

A few years back some guy tells me he shot a 830 series in a tournament. Looking at the tournament reulst sheet  I couldn't see his score any where as he was still talking to me. Was almost going say something to him and call him out on the spot, but decided to drop it. Found out later he placed his high three games together across the singles, doubles,  and team events.

It's funny. There's never any middle ground whenever you talk to random people about bowling. Either they brag about their supposed achievements like this dude, or they immediately determine that you should "go pro" if you tell them you average anything over 200.

 This the funniest story on here in a minute. Lol! I can imagine the look on your face when he says it and the the awkward balloon moment as your trying to inch closer to the door to peace out. Oh well, what did he avg it wit, a LT-48 he found on the rack? ROFL

Funny stuff.

 

 I once met a guy whose high game was lower than his average. Told me he averaged about 250 and once bowled a 245 game. This all came out in a prolonged conversation just like the OP was having.

 

 When I asked him how that was possible, he said it was because you bowl more than one game and add them up for the total.  When I mentioned that you divide the total by the number of games bowled, he said "Yea, I know that".

 

 Still haven't figured that one out.

I just hope I don't ever sound this stupid in a conversation that I really know nothing about....

 

Sounds like the guy we picked up one season at a league meeting when we were a man short.  Guy

says he avg about 178.  Turns out that was his high game, and the guy avg about 125 for about 9 weeks

before quitting the league

After reading some of these I was thinking... maybe these people dont know what the word AVERAGE means. Maybe they think avg. means highest game.  Just a thought..

Last Sunday I threw a 279 game. I should have quit and then my average would have been 279... Wait, that was on my second game. Never mind.

This is too funny, and I thought I was the only one to hear odd bowling stories. Everyone at my work knows I bowl, but there s that one guy who used to bowl. By looking at the guy you would never imagine he was a bowler due to his physical state, or lack thereof. Anyway, he asks what I average, I say "right around 200" he says "really, I use to average 230".  After conversing for a few, I state I just shot 723 and he goes on to say he never shot a 700. I look at him with a funny look and say "really, you averaged 690". He turns and leaves and we have never talked about bowling since.........
