I call BS on a blatant sandbag attempt...begin rant...
« on: August 12, 2004, 12:24:12 AM »
League started this week.  Guy averaged 195 last year in same league, 199 during the summer league.  His team rolled "unopposed" this week due to odd number of teams.  Dude rolls 129 in the first game and finishes 471...I have NEVER seen him below 550 since I've been bowling in this league.  As a matter of fact, entire team bowled well below what they averaged last season.  Conditions were not tough...one guy I bowl with shoots 688, guy on team we bowled against shoots 611, two guys on lanes to left shoot 630+.  We bowl "Sandy's" team either this week or next...if this happens again, I WILL say something to them.  <end rant>

Thats terrible.  Does the league have a 10 pin drop rule?

Stops alot of baggers.

It probably won't happen again next week, he already will have established a high handicap and can bowl closer to normal for an easy win when you meet up.  Im not sure what you can do, but its obvious that this team is up to something, especially if you have proof he was a much better bowler.

Baggers SUCK!!

We bowled a team of them last year.  Disgusting.  People boycotted the High Game Over Average pot in protest, since the guy won once a week

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

Do you not have a "Drop ten" rule?

Better yet, does the league have a "drop the sucker off the roof" rule?

Great idea Rag!!!

I'll have to check on the "drop 10" rule but even if he drops 10 off of last season's 195, its still 15 pins less than what he's capable of averaging (199 during summer).

It pisses me off especially since I bowl to the best of my ability every game.  Granted, some games are better than others but at least I'm trying on every shot.

Another approach to stem the sandbagging is to make the teams have to win the "unopposed" points by bowling within 10 pins of their average. In fact, I believe that ABC requires that kind of rule.

In most of the leagues I've bowled in where there is a vacancy team, we use this rule, i.e., a 5 man team has to bowl within 50 points of their team average to win the points. Cuts down on the sandbagging, and you'd be surprised how tough it can be to beat that score.

Here's a random thought on how to deal with sandbaggers.  If you suspect them of sandbagging have the laneman completely wall 'em up on their pair next week.  Make it impossible to miss the hole, or as much so as can be done; just build a funnel to the pocket.  See what they do then.

Pizzaguy - you are correct. ABC requires that you bowl within 10 pins of your average (or 40 for a 4 man team, for example), when bowling unapposed - otherwise the points go into the great "unassigned bucket".

Turkey - unless your league has specifically adopted a rule to oppose the above, seems to me that if they didn't bowl within the required number of pins below their average, they lost the games.

I usually don't bowl well unopposed because I just can't get up for it like I do if I'm bowling an opponent. In a Vegas league last year my team got our a***s whooped by the blind score one week. Why did we bowl so bad? I think it was because we just didn't have as much fun bowling alone and it was tougher to get excited about it. But we weren't sandbagging.

That 10 pins below average conceptually is very good for stopping sandbagging.

However, it has it's drawbacks too.

Bowled in a league where for whatever reason 31 and 32 were death!

Somehow our team got to bowl a blind there.  The weak before our high average guy who averaged 238 for the year and had just thrown two 79X the past two weeks went there and shot 487.  His teammate averaging 223 shot 455.

Our weak bowling blind because of the 10 pin drop rule I'm not sure we even won 1/2 the points because of 10 pin drop rule we all averaged about 505.  Most of us near 200!

I was high man on our team the last two games at 168 and 179.

The shot in the league was extremely long oil with lots of carry down most weaks.  This pair was just on fire!  No one had bothered bringing equipment for it any more.

Good point Mumzie, BUT this was probably the first week of the league.  ABC lets you set new averages each year instead of carrying over what you finished up with last year.

Most of my leagues use a 10 pin drop rule, combined with starting (the first 3 weeks) with last years average.  Hard to sandbag with these two combined.

I'd have to maybe think it was just the fact they were bowling against ummm welll nobody.  Last sunday was my last day of summer league and we bowled against the blind team and I shot about 100 pins under my avg. My teamate just barely made thier avg.  It just isn't fun bowling like that without any competition, almost seems like practice.

My mens league is like that. No drop rule at all. Last year, we had someone shoot 910 (for 3) the week after shooting 470...

A 910 series for 3? Quick! Somebody notify ABC!
