I call BS on a blatant sandbag attempt...begin rant...
« on: August 12, 2004, 12:24:12 AM »
League started this week.  Guy averaged 195 last year in same league, 199 during the summer league.  His team rolled "unopposed" this week due to odd number of teams.  Dude rolls 129 in the first game and finishes 471...I have NEVER seen him below 550 since I've been bowling in this league.  As a matter of fact, entire team bowled well below what they averaged last season.  Conditions were not tough...one guy I bowl with shoots 688, guy on team we bowled against shoots 611, two guys on lanes to left shoot 630+.  We bowl "Sandy's" team either this week or next...if this happens again, I WILL say something to them.  <end rant>

Sandbagging sucks and in my leagues, a captains meeting
is imediately called when anyone one is suspected of
these types of activities. We have a guy that books in
the 180's each year, and he came in and shot 700 plus
and we immediately re-rated him, in which are league
bylaws allow. Needless to say he never subbed again.
When there is money involved, there will always be
cheaters, that's why I prefer scratch tournaments and
not the THS's. If this person would to do it on one of
my other leagues, he would'nt walk the next day.

I have to agree bowling the first week against nobody would be hard to do and then establish average same night. Last year i joined a league at the start of the second half came in with a crappy 408 to establish average i guess 136 figuring it out right now. I was really trying was just lost on the pair and the people in the league who knew me thought something was wrong with me or some even probably thought i was bagging. Anyway i apoligized to the other team for bowling so poorly and knew we were going to kill people the following weeks as my real average would be thrown at upcoming teams. I then proceed with bowling better over the next few weeks and raised my average to 197 within 6 weeks but we never lost a game in the 6 week period because i had so much handicap then until i leveled off at 197. I would have had no problem with the 10 pin drop rule but it was never brought to my attention that it existed and i was think it would have been the right thing to impose on me after such a large difference of my start of that league. I think it is hard to shoot unimposed in my scratch league it was rough to get within 10 pins a game of average when shooting against the blind. The same league i started so poorly in i shot 710 one week and then shot 450 something the next week to a blind so i think it is hard to sometimes motivate and really shoot our average.

I do not sand bag have worked hard to improve and on the right night can shoot with anyone out there but sometimes i still find a pair that i do match up with or just find the right adjustment too late to score well. So it happens and myabe you should cut the guy a break because by the end of the first half i doubt it matters unless he holds first the whole way through.

People thought I was sandbagging because I sucked so bad this year.

While I too hate sandbaggers, here's my take on the teams that intentionally establish a lower than their ability average the 1st week.  They do get additional handicap the first few weeks, but eventually they will have to bowl to win.  Winter is a long season.

To prevent the unopposed sandbagging week 1, it seems the solution is to have a league rule that they must bowl within 10 pins of the previous season book.

As for the higher summer average, I usually average higher in the summer.  The season is shorter and for some reason I match up better to the lane condition.  This year though that was not the case
