How would you play this...
« on: January 14, 2004, 05:51:25 PM »
Going to a tourney this weekend at an older wood lane house.  They have one of the most bizarre oil patterns that I've seen in awhile.  There is a swamp of oil from the gutter to the 5 board, next to no oil from 5-8 and twice the swamp from 8 to center.  It's an abvious blocked condition.  I normally play a shot that starts around 10 goes out to 5 and hooks back into pocket.

Now you can see my dilemma.  You would have to have near perfect accuracy to play my favourite shot in this house.  Pull it inside a board and it slides past the breakpoint.  Go outside of 5 and it's a 10 pin no matter how many revs you've got.  And if you play around that dry area at all it burns up so quick you're out of control before you know it!!

I thought of playing straight up the 3rd arrow, but there will be mext to no angle of entry & I'm afraid of leaving alot of weak spares & splits.

Balls I have available to use:

Fuze Detonator drilled pin below ring, CG below c/l kicked out, balance hole beside thumb, 35 trizact finish
Rhino Re Pearl drilled pin above ring, CG on midline, polished to 1500
Pro Purple Saw drilled pin below ring, CG on midline, polished 600

Anyone ever play a condition like this that could give some advice?  I'd sure appreciate it!

I guess I would have 2 aproaches to this:

Play straight up 6. This seems to be where you say the track is so if you play straight up 6 and pull it you should still be in the pocket, if you leak it out to 5 you should also be in the pocket.

The second would be to move way deep, probably in to the fifth arrow. From in here you would want to really rip the cover off the ball while keeping the ball speed down getting the ball out to 6-7 down the lane. Doing this may create area. I actually use this technique on a similar pattern in a league I sub in and it works fairly well.

Good luck, try some new things and I'm sure you'll figure it out. It's hard to give adjustment advice without actually seeing the pattern, but these are suggestions you may want to try.

Jeffrevs,

not sure on the length.  I would guess somewhere around 35 feet or so, but to play it you'd think the full 60 was oiled.  I had a horrible set the last time I bowled in this house.  Hopefully the results will be a little better; or they change the pattern

What's even worse is that this shot will get worse before it gets better.  Inside players (who will struggle for sure) are going to push all of the oil into that dry 3 board area and cause skid in your break point.  So that little bit of bounce you have on the 3 boards will be blended out for sure, but not in a good way.

If the lanes start to dry out, which they should if it's old wood, then the shot will just keep moving inside and will get very easy.

Bones hit this on the head though, this shot is a grinder's shot.  Once they start drying out, if some of the crankers are left, they're going to start stringing strikes and will have a big advantage.

The way I would play that shot is a straighter shot right up 4 board. Now, I said straighter, but what you would want to do is have a slight angle to the pocket when you release the ball. This means have the ball hit the dry board at 6 or 7 board at about 42-44 ft. This shot always works for me when I play on the tube shot. The only problem that comes from playing this line that sometimes the ball hits the pocket too hard.

I went to a tournament in August that had this shot. I was watching the crankers struggle to get the ball back, OR they were getting it back too hard, and the strokers were having the same problem. I was the only person playing the line I stated above, and I was the only bowler that finished the 5 game set over 200 average. I was +187. Give it a try and see if you can pull that off.

Straight as you can, right up the tube as Bob said or even point it up to the pocket if you can do that, although personally I like to play closer to 10. If you tug it, it will hold, if you throw it out a little bit you still have some dry outside to help.

That WAS the house shot where I bowled for years and the straighties just absolutely destroyed it while the tweeners and crankers just tried to survive.
