pitch of a thumb hole
« on: October 05, 2015, 07:46:42 AM »
Is there a way to measure the pitch of a thumb hole without using the tool the pro shop uses?

I don't think you can accurately measure a pitch without a tool.  You can use a straight tool like a pencil to eyeball and tell whether it is forward or reverse, or has laterals

Defintely need a tool. HOWEVER, I found what is an admittedly fairly cheap plastic set of pitch gauges that are ok. Not great, but for $20, it's not a bad accessory to have. YOu have to be careful and they are finicky, but I have had 2 pro shops locally that can't agree on pitches, and think having this set is a low cost way of getting a pretty darn good idea....

How can someone that drills not agree on the angles of the holes (pitches)?

Problems with measurement arise when hand beveling and/or tape is used to customize the hole

That has nothing to do (nor should it) with a hole drilled at an angle, that's after effects...

You could take a pencil and center in the drilled hole and guesstimate the angle the hole is at

First, why would someone try and measure pitch with tape in the hole. First clue to find a new driller. Second, if one puts a pitch gage in a hole and it is pointing at 1/8", what's to argue? Second clue to find a new driller.
