I do not bowl professionally nor do I want to lug/own more than 3 balls. There is only 1 alley within 10mi of me that uses heavy oil. I bowl there a halfdozen games a month, so dont really need an Animal-like ball, but do need a medium ball that could carry enough boards with more revs or less speed, that wont burn out. I might join a league this fall if can progress my game to more consistently strike.

Then stick with the mid range balls - for example, the Brunswick Monster line.
They are really versatile - not so condition specific as the higher end stuff.

if you can find one, a danger zone original is a great addition to the mid/ heavy oil... really carries well on all conditions.

I was impressed with a friend of mine throwing a Detour for medium oiled lanes, had a nice arc to the pocket. Myself, I love my Eraser Pearl Particle from Storm for medium/heavy to medium conditions, it's matched up well on short and long oil conditions.

I hear what you are saying about not wanting to spend a ton of money on a big arsenal- if you bowl mostly in the same houses, I would say a medium/heavy ball, a medium ball and a light oil ball should be enough for you.

You sound like a guy/gal that needs to take your question to your local pro shop. First do a little research. Check out some of the manufactures web sites and look at their "medium range" balls. Then go to some of the web-site pro shops and get a feel for prices on the ones you like. After you narrow down your selections look up the ball reviews on this site and get a feel what owners of these balls think..afetr you're loaded with all this knowledge, you and your pro shop guy can select what will fit your game. Just like buying a new car. Do a little research, see what catches your eye, figure out your budget, and then go talk to the salesman...
