I got severely humbled today
« on: April 30, 2008, 08:32:42 AM »
I went to the lanes today to shoot some footage for Roto's Cell contest.  The center I bowled at is where the Ladies and Legends tourney is going to be held next week.  I already had everything I wanted on video, so I was goofing around.

My coach Tom Carter yelled at me asking me what I was doing.  He had a man I didn't recognize standing next to him.  Tom told me to throw a "real shot".  Afterwards, the gentleman came and introduced himself to me as Kevin Croucher.

He then spent about 10 minutes talking to me about my armswing, which I already knew was garbage.  He told me and showed me what the problem was and also some pointers on how to fix it.  I luckily got the session on tape but not sure if the audio will work (bunch of middle school kids around yelling).

I know Mr. Croucher meant well, and I really appreciate the time he took to try and help me.  Unfortunately, my biggest enemy has always been my confidence and not believing that I can do anything right.  Even though I work very hard at getting better, I've always believed that I was no good.  Maybe I can get my swing fixed, maybe not.  I guess all I can do is try.

Well if its confidence you lack....Your playing the wrong game bud, because once thats gone you have NO shot.

I don't know about that, I think I'll have to disagree somewhat.  Practicing doesn't necessarily lead to confidence.  If you're practicing with the mindset of "OH man, my swing is horrible, I need to fix it!" and you don't immediately solve it, your confidence becomes even worse.  I know this from experience, considering the last year and a half I had bowled, my mindset was simply "Gotta fix this crappy form" which ended up just putting me in a negative thought process, since all I thought about was what I was doing wrong.  After a good shot, I didn't think "All right, see, I'm fine"...All I thought was "I likely won't do that again since my swing/approach isn't great".  Coaching only helped while I was being coached, otherwise I went back to the same mindset once I was on my own and mad a poor shot.

I haven't bowled since August, but I can tell you all this time off has made bowling and therefore my form much less important to me; I'm not constantly worrying about it like I used to.  As a result, I actually have a lot more confidence than I used to.  In fact, you could almost say I'm arrogant now.  Is it really founded on anything?  No, I'm still no David Ozio in terms of form by any means.  But taking this time off helped me realize "So what?"  Just make do with what you have, because to be bluntly honest, a lot of people have pretty poor (textboox) form but do just fine.  Why?  Because they don't worry about that, they just go out and make shots.  I would look at someone who others would tell me has worse form than I did and wonder exactly how they were beating me by 30 pins.  It's because their mental game/confidence overcame their lack of physical perfection.

Also, the time off has helped me loosen up not only mentally, but physically.  When I was at the peak of my correction-obsession, everything I did was insanely forced because, well, I was trying really hard.  Don, I know you're obviously not me (I'm insane), but I'm willing to bet you do suffer from the same general sense of "I'm trying to get better, but I'm still not awesome, therefore I'm horrible and won't ever get better" thought process.  You may not be willing to take off 8 months (6 is probably the minimum to do something really effective) but at least try to just calm down and realize that A) Bowling's not the most important thing in your life, just enjoy it and B) I'm sure at some point Walter Ray has thought "Wow, I jerk my head a lot and muscle my swing.  That's not textbook at all.  Hmm, my vast amount of titles don't seem to care."  A healthy attitude will FAAARRR outweigh the fact that someone has some flaws in their form, while someone with decent form will continue to put up bad scores if they don't believe in themselves.

Ok I agree that only positive practice and coaching will help, but if you think i am going to make a great shot no matter how bad your form it shows. If you think you suck and have negative thoughts you reap what you sow per say.

I want the game on me going to the 10 th frame, it makes me clamp down and do my best sometimes it works well and sometimes i flag a pin off to lose but never do i believe that i am going to fail.

I love that saying tenpin. "Last thought in first action out."

It is so true. I have averaged around 200 for several years and just couldn't get to the next level. It seemed as i just couldn't get away without throwing that one boneheaded shot that killed a big game. I thought my game was pretty solid. I'm now age 43 and had no real coaching since college age 19. I finally listened to a few of the guys i bowl nationals with year after year. Last year in Reno i finally booked a C.A.T.S session with Mike Jasnau at Lane 81. I think it was around $130 for the 1 1/2 lesson. Mike found a few flaws in my delivery that helped free up my armswing. That was the key to help me repeat shots. (Even under pressure) Shot my first 300 and averaged 215 in my one and only league. The key to performing is knowing that your game is sound. My confidence is at a all time high. I suggest that you find a certified coach and invest in yourself! You can keep spending $150-$200 for the newest ball over and over looking for that magic ball to cure what wrong. It's cheaper in the long run to fix your game. Just my opinion but, i've learned my lesson.

I agree. AND - if he hadn't seen something something in your game worth workng with, he wouldn't have taken the time with you.

I was in a very similar mind frame for the past year or so.  While my average has only gone up 3 pins from last season, my bowling is much better by keeping a positive attitude.  Everybody has a few bad frames, and they're not detrimental to your set; just go up there and do what you do best.  And by keeping optimistic, it's helped my game PLENTY, especially in clutch spots in league, and in tournaments.  I think bowling is like, 90% mental, maybe more.

I don't understand the humbled part.

How where you humbled?

Sounds like all they did was give some free advice.
