I hate bowling in the summertime
« on: June 29, 2003, 06:56:57 AM »
I bowled a regional this weekend in Texarkana, TX.  This was my first regional and I just decided to bowl of Friday.  It was more of a vacation and a chance to hang out with some friends.  After the practice round we had a 4 game sweeper.  After a couple of games, my thumb was hanging up in the ball and I never could clear it clean the rest of the night.

I drew B squad and again started off OK but not great.  I was +75 after 3 and ended up +32.  I had the same thing happen with my thumb.  It seems that I never could get my hand dry and hung up in the ball the rest of the day.  It made spare shooting equally difficult.

What do you do when this happens?  I have never used anything before and this hasn't happend to me except in the heat of the summer.

HOSE .. I have a similar problem .. although my problem is in reverse of yours .. I start off with a SNUG/TIGHT hole and after a few frames it loosens .. to get started I use a LITTLE (VERY LITTLE)CHAP STICK on my thumb .. TOO MUCH will let the ball slip out of your hand.

Don't start doing this in the middle of a TOURNAMENT .. but try it .. I think you'll be happy and it doesn't COST TOO MUCH to TRY!

Good luck!

I have to reccommend that Hypafix tape that MI_2_AZ was shipping samples of.

It's REALLY thin so fit doesn't get too snug & the thumb comes out cleanly every time.

I wouldn't have been able to bowl this summer without the stuff.

If he still has a bit left he might send you a sample. Just message MI_2_AZ.

Good luck!

Update.  As stated before, I've never used anything other then a towel.  I went to the center and put a little easy slide on the back of my thumb and it seemed fine.  I was afraid that I'd slip out of the ball.  I'll go and throw a few tonight and see if that was all it took.  If it's that easy, I'm going to feel really stupid.  I just didn't want to try something I've never done before.

Rantings, If you saw me bowl, you'd break my arm to make sure I didn't bowl during the summer.  I made a real easy shot look tough

There seems to be two seperate topics with the same title. ?

Hose, if you want to try some of the Hypafix thumb tape, I still have some to send.  Message me with your mailing address and I will send you some samples.  I dont sell this, I am just trying to help since other bowlers on this site are very helpful in other ways.

Magic Carpet would fix this problem immediately! Open up the thumbhole and put the magic carpet in against the back of your thumb. It gives you some tolerance in size and yet your thumb comes out cleanly. Try it, you'll like it.

Find this amazing .. guy is complaining that his thumb is sticking after a few games and people are responding telling him to USE TAPE .. what am I missing?

Maybe all of you are telling him to ENLARGE THE HOLE then use tape before it swells THEN REMOVE THE TAPE .. if that's what's suggested I don't think it's clear .. AND .. I don't like the idea! Especially since it doesn't happen till he bowls A NUMBER OF GAMES ..

I'm a USER of the tape mentioned BUT NOT WHEN MY THUMB WON'T FIT IN THE BALL!

Like I said, there is another topic with the same title as this one.  In that one, I responded thusly:

Posted 6/29/2003 11:06 PM

What I try to do is open the thumbhole up when my thumb is swollen, then use Magic Carpet and bowling tape in the thumbhole to snug it back up. When the thumb swells, I remove a piece of tape or two. Extreme case would be to remove the Magic Carpet. Oh, and I sometimes put some Hypafix tape or nuskin on the thumb to help ease it out of the thumbhole.

Joe, I wasn't reccommending that he open up the hole since the hole would end up being too big in the winter.

The idea is that if you begin using the tape BEFORE it starts to swell, then you wont ever have a problem with it getting too tight.

The Hypa-fix tape is so thin that I have never had a problem fitting into my thumbholes with it on. The reduced friction from using the hypafix on his thumb should prevent it from swelling in the first place.

Peterj99, you are right, I forgot about the potato.  Unfortunately, most nights I dont have my potato with me.    I've heard of this many times before but have never gotten around to trying it out for myself.  I believe it will work since I have heard it many times in the distant past, so one of these days I will have to bring a potato with me to the lanes.

As for the idea of wrapping the thumb in a tissue or such, I remember hearing many years ago to use a silk hankie.  Wrap it around the thumb, insert the thumb into the thumbhole a couple of times and the swelling goes down.  Also can be done with a dollar bill wrapped around the thumb since most people again do not carry silk hankies with them anymore.
