I hate bowling in the summertime
« on: June 29, 2003, 06:56:56 AM »
I bowled a regional this weekend in Texarkana, TX.  This was my first regional and I just decided to bowl of Friday.  It was more of a vacation and a chance to hang out with some friends.  After the practice round we had a 4 game sweeper.  After a couple of games, my thumb was hanging up in the ball and I never could clear it clean the rest of the night.

I drew B squad and again started off OK but not great.  I was +75 after 3 and ended up +32.  I had the same thing happen with my thumb.  It seems that I never could get my hand dry and hung up in the ball the rest of the day.  It made spare shooting equally difficult.

What do you do when this happens?  I have never used anything before and this hasn't happend to me except in the heat of the summer.

Well, now I at least get to put a face to this name. I bowled with you on Friday in the sweeper. I guess that is what you would call it. I never did figure out 17&18, they ate my lunch Saturday too. That pair cost me at least being even and 19 & 20 were not much better. As far as your question, it really was not that hot in the center. I think part of it was tension or I know mine was, because once I relaxed on Saturday I was not hot at all and things got much better on the lanes as well. I finished the day by striking out for a 6 bagger and a 240. On suggestions for the swelling. One tip that was given to me by a friend several years ago was to keep a little tissue paper (Kleenex) in the bag and squeeze the thumb down to get the swelling out. For sweating I go ahead and put NuSkin on to start with, that has helped in the past or use a little soap stone, although you would have to have someway at the regionals of keeping it in a container and off of the tables, floor, shoes or anything else or you can be fined. I was the guy from Terrell with the Storm shirts on and hanging out with Kevin M.

Thank god for bevel sanders in the summer, and white bowlers' thumb tape in the winter.

What I try to do is open the thumbhole up when my thumb is swollen, then use Magic Carpet and bowling tape in the thumbhole to snug it back up.  When the thumb swells, I remove a piece of tape or two.  Extreme case would be to remove the Magic Carpet.  Oh, and I sometimes put some Hypafix tape or nuskin on the thumb to help ease it out of the thumbhole.

Tex, were you the one that was sitting with Mitchell today during Eddy's final match?  If you watched me bowl, I'm sorry for making such an easy shot look hard.  There are no excusses for bowling that bad.

Thanks for the help, it couldn't have been all those beers Friday night

I was at the counter this morning. I think I was leaving as you came in the door. I had the TraumaER shirt on Friday.
