WHO'S THE BEST?
« on: June 30, 2003, 03:02:20 AM »
IF WALTER RAY WERE TO CATCH EARL ANTHONY'S TITLES IN FIVE YEARS OR LESS. WOULD WALTER RAY BE THE BEST EVER? PERHAPS- BUT EARL IS BEST LEFT-HANDER EVER AND W.R IS THE BEST RIGHT-HANDED. WHAT ALL OF YOU THE BOWLERS THINK?
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

The thing that really stands out to me is that Earl did it in fewer seasons than did Walter Ray.  And he would sometimes take time off from the tour and still come back and win.  Plus he often tore up the left side when no other lefties were even on the radar screen.  No offense to Walter at all.  He is the greatest bowler of our time.  But the best that's ever been?  I'd say I'd have to stick with Earl.

I will say that Walter Ray isn't the best bowler out there... but he's the most successful. He takes advantages of the chances he gets.

The most talented bowler out on tour in my opinion has to be Norm Duke. Versatility is the name of his game, and his physical game is just awesome.

Again, these are two top notch bowlers... and both of them are the top 1 and 2 spare shooters out on tour, and thats what makes them so great.

the bowler who amasses the most titles on the pba tour is considered the best. right now that honor belongs to the late great earl anthony who has 41. when walter ray williams, jr., reaches win #42 he'll be considered the best ever. right now he has to settle( !! )for being the best righthander ever and the best player of the 1990's and the 2000's.

Earl will always be the best. Before the bar was raised with the reactive age, he was awesome. I don't know how many of you have ever seen him bowl in person, but let me tell you - he wasn't the most powerful, and his ball speed wasn't the highest around (normally), but you want smooth? You want results?? He was incredible. He was the MAN!!!

WRW is definitely the most successful player today. I have to agree with Jeremy about the distinction - with Duke probably the most versatile. But, success is the name of the game...

But NO ONE will EVER top Anthony in my book. Ever.

Walter Ray by far.

Earl was the best lefty during the era of the lefties.

Half the time Earl won 15 or 16 of the match play finalist where left handed.

Walter has to beat the lefties and the righties and do the additional adjustments that right handers make.

Walter Ray.... The best right now.

at least in one area walter ray williams, jr., has equaled the great earl anthony. this past year he was named pba player of the year for the SIXTH time, equaling the feat that anthony last accomplished in 1983.

I should also add - I wouldn't want to draw either Earl or WRW in brackets. :-)

I would because I remember in 1979, whe I bowled Juniors.  We were told that the 3rd game (plus hdcp), of our series, would be compared to Earl's Earl's 1st.  I shot a 187 scratch, and he had a bad day for a 176; I was excited that even if it was a 1 in a million thatit happened, I can say I did!!  Goes to show you that you should never let anyone intimidate you!  Earl Anthony will forever be the best a shot repeater and consistant.  He was always like a machine, that never seem to make a mistake, and I never saw him loose his cool.  Look up the word "classy" in the bowler's dictionary, and it says see Earl Anthony!!

Walter Ray is great and I take nothing away from him, but Earl was automatic.  Look how much he did in such a short period of time.  It is kind of like Emmitt Smith finally surpassing Walter Payton's rushing record.  Great feat give him his due.  Too bad he has had to hang on too long to do it.  Took him quite a bit more time and I think in my mind it cheapened it.

A little different slant on the topic.  Everyone looks at the individual bowlers and this is not the whole case.  Look at their competition at the times and the conditions in which they bowled in.  Even a six foot man can be a giant in the land of pygmies.  Is the level of competition the same, worse or better for each.

But Walter’s done it on wood and a variety of  synthetics. Using plastic, urethane, resin,  pro-active balls, 3-piece, 2-piece, multi-part cores, and asymmetrical cores. . The argument is un-resolvable so everyone can have their own opinion and be correct.

The other thing (which has little to do with bowling) if you want to be impressed watch him throw horseshoes. Ringer after ringer after ringer. Now that’s repeating shots with no help from the lane man.
