I have a real problem w/ my bowling alley!!

Happened again last night; I go to shot a 10 pin, stick at the line, hop to catch my balance, step on the lane and slip in the oil, landing on my butt.  Nearly happened on the other lane a bit later, but I was looking for it.  WHY CAN"T THE BOWLING ALLEY CLEAN THE APPROACHES SO THIS DOESN"T HAPPEN?  If it continues I"m quitting.  I'm sore all over today and getting really fed up.

That really sucks to hear...

What have the counter people said about it?  If they don't do anything at that point, then I would say is there another place you can go to?  There's a bunch of good places by me but only one has a really great approach for sliding.

Its common for houses to have a different feel in areas of their approaches that are not used as much as other areas.  I would suggest that you either go much slower in your attempts at the 10 pin (in this house) or move your 10 pin spare 5 boards (target and feet) or whatever it takes to get away from where ever the area is that is giving you problems.  

Bowled in one house that was in very bad disrepair.  The approaches were synthetic, but they were like a quilt.  Made up of blocks of appraoch material.  And they were not all level.  Just happened that a raised seam was right on my 10 pin board.  Tripped over it for a game and then just decided to move away from that board totally to avoid injury.  

Until someone sues them and wins (which are two different things) you probably won't be able to get them to change their maintenance routine.  And winning a law suit won't be easy since a lot of bowling alleys have a sign that says bowl at your own risk.  Not that a measly sign would help them if you were badly injured, but just move over a bit and hopefully you'll find a more consistent approach area.

Did you ever think the problem was your bad timing or bad shoes.Or the fact that most centers are suspect to a different slide consistency due to lack of activity in those areas of sliding.Most approaches do not need to cleaned just dry mopped.More often than not cleaning approaches equals bad news.And when cleaned distilled water should be used and distilled water only.

Rag I am with you. Synthetic approaches are bad enough for me but then when I move to the corner to shoot a 10 I halt instantly. It has very little to do with the cleanliness of the approach but has to do with many bowlers sliding in a specific area and making that area more slippery.

I like to shoot the 10 sliding on the corner and looking at 23. But I fing on syntheics I have to slide 5 right of the corner and look at 20. I dont like it but I dont like sticking.

I have ordered some additional heals (made of leather) that should be delivered today that might help me with this problem for my dynaroo's. I will let you know.

For the record, I am a big guy, 260lbs and I apply a much larger force down when I slide. Anything remotely tacky completely destroys my physical game and I end up changing my timing completely to compensate. Adjusting my timing to a early timing helps me with sticky/tacky approaches.

slide sock...all leather heel...check the sides before we start,..no problems.
synthetic approaches were built for the centers not the bowlers,...they are the worst...be careful.

Because of the #*$(@*& synthetic approaches I have gone to Jim’s approach.

I use a slide sock with a red leather heel. I only take them off if the approaches are like ice.

I would rather slide too much than stick and be thrown forward.

I’ve been surprised that houses have gotten away with synthetic approaches. Plus many have seams deep on the approach that you can hang up on.

They are so inconsistent and a safety hazard. You would have thought some lawsuits would get them away from using them.

It appears you either have to change your game to plant at the foul line or go to a heel sole combination that will always slide.

But even then you get surprises.

Sawbones while I do what you suggest on synthetics they sometimes will change during the session and I hate to test slide everytime. You’ll slide fine one time and then stick/slip on the next shot in that area.

Brick, lol, but no.  I do always check the slide area that I use on my strike shots, but, until now, hadn't thought to check all across the foul line.  I'll not make that mistake again.  One of the problems is that the college league bowls just before us and there seems not to be enough time to oil and get everything else done in readiness for my league - so the approaches don't get cleaned.  I guess I should be happy that they oil.

My house got new management. They are extremely strict on clean approaches and even keep the gutters glossy, heh.

The difference in quality of experience is night and day. With that said, try to find out who's above the center's management and write them a well thoughtout letter about the job the center's management is doing. Try to get others to do the same.

One my centers does the same thing, I don't think they clean them once a month. At one end of the house you actually see coke stains at the start of the approuch. And this is a big seccessful center too, they just don't care.

Ugh.  It's depressing to read about bowling centers not caring about the people who play there.
