I Hope This Helps....
« on: September 17, 2003, 10:17:01 PM »
But, it probably won’t, as there will probably still be some bashers out there ready to pounce on anything I do or say.

One thing people have forgotten is that the season early yet and no damage has been done.  I can still revoke my decision on quitting and I have.  I made 3 phone calls today to try to rectify the oil problem.

First, I called the captain of my Thursday night league and I told him that while I’m disgusted with the events going on in the league (throwing wrist supports around, long waiting game, lack of oil) I’m going to stick it out.  In the mean time we’re going to address the oil problem to management.  I told him that while I’m disgusted with the condition I will stick the league out, but I’m hoping oil can get laid down.  I will flatten out my hand (something I don’t like to do) if the condition is dry tonight.  Tonight is the next bowling night for the league I’m 198 in, 12 pins down from my normal average and it will probably go lower.  I told him that he is my friend and I didn’t want to leave the team hanging.

Second, for the other league I called both the manager of the house and the league president to address the really bone dry condition.  The house manager said that they didn’t oil the lanes at all during that day, but they are expected to be oiled next week.  They had 3 leagues before us that day so we had nothing.  I was told from now on they will be oiled in the morning and in the afternoon before the evening leagues start.  We will get second shift because we start at 9 and they don’t have time to oil the lanes.  I told her I was fine with that as long as there is some oil.  I don’t have a problem playing inside.  I can play that shot almost as good as I can outside.

As far as adjusting goes, it is early in the season and I haven’t tried everything I’m capable of doing in a 3 game series.  I haven’t flattened out my hand yet because I was trying a variety of balls and lines.  Think about it. There’s a ton of things you can try and you’re foolish to think you can try them all in a 3 game set. In just the first 2 weeks of bowling I’m being told on this board that I can’t adjust. I haven’t event begun to try hand positions because it is easier for me to try different lines and equipment changes first.  If that fails I will try a different hand position.  I just feel I haven’t been given an honest chance here on this board.  There are so many things to try when the lanes are too dry for you that it is sometimes difficult to make the correct choice off the bat. If you can, then you would be a Norm Duke or Walter Ray Williams.

As one poster said, I really don’t see where encouragement exists here on this board.  I have to agree with that.
I want to have a 220+ average like everybody else around here, so give me fresh oil.

I've read all the bennett posts............AND...........

He got ripped a bit, it wasn't 'that' bad, but he did get ripped. And the only reason he got ripped is because he came right out and said "I quit".  I can kind of see why this happened, ...not necessarily to the degree it did, but ...

We've all had bad conditions......and it does suck when we do.....

Wasn't it Bad Gurl who did the same thing and got ripped beyond belief ?? Can't remember........anyhow.........

bennett,...glad to hear you worked it out.

I probably started the criticism. I (like Rags) feel you are now doing the right thing.

You have constructively tried to get with the management of the centers and are trying to rectify what you perceive to be a problem. Hopefully the dry lane issue with the one league being after 3 leagues has been resolved. If the issues are not resolved to your satisfaction by the end of the season then let your leaving the center be your vote and I have no problem with that.

As in any business you need feedback from the customers to improve your service and the best feed back (and generally the most you get) is normally critical of your operation. Simply walking away does not give the management of the business any feel to what they need to correct.

Good luck with your bowling and I hope you find a way to score.

I have to commend the management of the center Bennett bowls in for admitting that the lanes were not oiled. If it was my center I would have been told that that is the way it is and the lanes were oiled and I just suck.

The next week would find me bringing my dry lane arsenal only to find out that they oiled the lanes this week and I would have the opposite problem. My advice to Bennett is still bring a ball for medium and oil just incase.

I don't think I have a problem with the Prodigy oil, just the lane machine uses pads and not sprayers to put the shot down (30ft, buffed to 42)and every other pair of lanes the 10 board pad sticks and oils the full 42 feet only on a few boards around the 10 board. I practiced on one pair and did well, it seemed that I had as much room as I wanted, but when I moved over 2 pair to bowl in the league the shot was so tight it played like a sport pattern, then broke down quickly, never fully opening up. I had to play a tight shot up the middle with not much hand in it.

I used to get upset and wonder what I was doing there, but I realized that I was just there to have fun, of course I have more fun when I am scoring well.

Great decision bennett. I think I would have been pretty upset by what was happing to your leagues also.
I think I would have done what you have had to do now, first though.
I would have had a quiet word with the league committee first.
I would then have put a complaint in writing to the manager of the alley and asked his reasons for the poor maintainance procedures. I would also have asked other bowlers who felt the same to sign along with myself and see what happened.
I know you felt bad, but you have come up with the sensible decision in the end.
Mind you in your place I dont know what my first call would have been.
Its easy in hindsight.
An example of this is that when they were resurfacing our lanes they could not strip them for a couple of weeks and one of our very experienced bowlers called off all of his games during that time. He felt bad about it later, but was in such a mood on the seventh night that he left and said he wasnt coming back until they were stripped and he didnt.

What I mean is that the lanes we use were up for general resufacing. They are wood. When they did this they were advised that they could keep oiling them, but they could not strip them for(I think ) 14 days.
The lanes got super oily and there was literally no backend.
They are fine now, but one of the guys just wouldnt bowl while they were like that.
Anyhow I live out in the country far, far from London. They have some nice lanes down there. I think Airport bowl would be a nice one to try as my brother said he loved it when he bowled there.Long time ago though.
