Another foul question.
« on: October 11, 2004, 02:50:00 AM »
The topic about calling a foul on yourself reminded me of this.  Is this a foul?  You throw the ball, watch it hit then turn around to walk back to the pit.  In the process of turning your non-sliding heel triggers the foul light.  Did you foul?  Happened to me once and everyone said I fouled, so we went on from there.  But I've never been convinced that you can foul after you've put 10 in the pit.

Interesting question! I was under the impression that foul related to DELIVERING the ball .. you say this happened after delivered an after score was recorded .. I would say NO FOUL .. if the sweeper had not yet performed .. perhaps you are still delivering .. in that case it would be a FOUL since you are still considered delivering. This is MY OPINION and how I would rule if I was one of the captains!

Rule 5a. A foul occurs when a part of the player’s body encroaches on or goes beyond the foul line and touches any part of the lane, equipment or building during or after a delivery. A ball is in play after a delivery until the same or another player is on the approach in position to make a
succeeding delivery.
The certification and inspection committee of a local association can require that the foul linebe plainly marked on the walls, posts, division boards or any other structure in a bowling center on a line with the regular foul line.
When a foul is recorded the delivery counts but the player is not credited with any pins knocked down by that delivery. (See Rule 6b.)

Rags – By the rule the ball is in play until the next bowler is on the approach so technically you have fouled even though the ball may be coming back.

'Bones, yes, I have seen that.  Everyone knows that cheating took place when you see it, but you can't really prove anything.

Pinbuster, thanks.  I guess I fouled.  Normally I back away a step or two before turning, however sometimes I turn immediately.  I guess that when I do that I'm in danger of fouling with my right heel.

For another interesting example of a foul, carefully watch the Dexter commercial of David Ozio bowling .  He fouls with his right (nonsliding) foot ON THE ADJACENT LANE.  I asked David about it, and he said the camera crew set him up as a joke.  They asked him to turn his body more to the right, into the camera.  --  JohnP
