OOB Coverstocks in same line.
« on: October 31, 2013, 08:32:22 AM »
Since I bought the Defiant Edge, I have really liked the RotoGrip Line.  I have purchased the Wrecker, then the Totally Defiant (Replaced my chipped up Edge) and Deranged.  Yesterday I bought the Scream for Drier lanes.

Interestingly enough, All of the balls seemed to hook about the same for me.  All of them are OOB 1500 and Polish.  I was playing around with my old C300 Outburst and had it at 3000 no polish and was having some problems at one of the houses because of dry lanes.  I put polish over the 3000 and the ball went much further down the lane.  This struck me as a "DUH!" moment, so I have decided to modify the finish on all of my RotoGrip balls to:  Totally Defiant-1000/Polish  Deranged-1500/Polish  Wrecker-2000/Polish Scream-3000/polish.

I guess my question to everyone, have you had to modify the surface of OOB balls to get them to act the way they were advertised.  In other words, a dry lane ball acting like a dry lane ball instead of a hook monster?  For me it has little to do with my speed because I am about 14.5 at the pins with 350 revs and all of the OOB roto balls hook the same for me.

I know your pain.  Theyre all 4000 with step 2 polish I belive OOB from utah.  Your pro shop can adjust as necessary,  but the 1500 grit with polish tends to work for mostly everyone most of the time.

Try an extender polish?

Some guys do what you did your line up too.

I have my own spinner, but had never really tried to alter new OOB surfaces before.  I believe it is necessary in this case, so I have nothing to lose but time a patience.  Now my Roto line is HP4 to HP1 and I really expected quite a bit of difference between the HP4 Totally Defiant and Hp1 Scream, but I am not seeing it.  Maybe I should go back to a 2 ball bag and save myself a lot of money.
I have had limited success with extender. I have found sanding to be more effective.

Keep in mind that you never know if you have the first or the fifteenth ball that came of the line.  So if you want to be able to truly duplicate the surface of a new ball you need to put it on the spinner before you ever throw it.  In a perfect world every ball would be sanded with new pads coming out of the factory for consistency, but the reality is they aren't.
