I need a new ball...dont know what to get?
« on: December 02, 2011, 07:29:08 AM »
Ok hi to all im new to this forum but not new to bowling. Been bowling just as recreation since i can remember but just recently starting to take it a lil more seriously. Not as quite as serious as to go onto a tournament but ive been doing mixed leauges now for a couple years. I've taught myself how to hook a ball and most of the need to know basics. BUT the balls ive been using i dont think have been up to the challenge. The alley i go to are pretty inconsistnent at oiling up the lanes. Some nights it'll be drier then the sahara without a drop of oil on the lanes it seems and some nights it seems like they throw a few gallons on per lane. And the ball i use wont hook at all in medium to heavy oil conditions and it ruins my scores/series...and sometimes my night cuz it pisses me off lol.

My shot:

Right Handed

Stroker Style

5 Step aproach (usually a fast paced approach but can slow myself down if needed)

Ball Speed: 15-17 ish

Rev Rate: Average

Track: Low

I dont throw the ball cross lane and let the ball snap/hook back in. I typicaly Start on the Far Right Aproach Dot (closest to the the foul line) and center the Dot between my shoes and throw the ball down the RIGHT Side of the lane and have the ball hook in at the end. Not quite sure how far down the lane when the ball begins to come back in but id say the last 20-15 ft with a semi tight but smooth arc/break.

My Ball (first "hook" ball ive bought and have only/ever used)

Brunswick Groove Urethane. 16lbs with fingertips

The place i had drill it i dont believe knew the kind of shot i have so im not so sure if it was drilled to my style. But it does seem to do the trick on a dry lane. Once that ball finds some oil forget about it ever coming back in the way i want it to. I always have to change how i throw it and that never stays the same as the lanes break down. so i end up having a crappy night.

Im looking to purchase a good performance ball that will react on a Medium to Heavy Oil for a House Pattern. I dont want to spend an Arm n a Leg buying one tho. I dont throw cross lane so a ball that works the right side and snaps back in with good power to get some good pin action is idealy what im looking for. So can anyone help me out with what im looking for??? thanks in advance.

if you really want to get serious i would see if you could get some lessons from a experienced pro shop that also gives lessons. you should also get 3 balls. heavy oil ball - med oil ball - and one for dry. but at least 2 for different  conditions, your coach/pro shop  would be able to help you with all of that, but find someone who is reputable. good luck!

I bowl with a guy on my team is pretty good, 200+ average consistent and has a 300 game under his belt so he gives me tips and such. But i was looking more for a ball that will do the job for the style i have/use in a medium to a heavy oil. But most strike lines i see for the balls ive been looking at have a "cross lane" shot. I need a ball i can throw down the right side of the lane and have it break in predictably in medium to heavy oil. Ive been looking at the Brunswick Massive Damage or the Storm HyRoad or Prodigy.

Since you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, here are some good options in the mid-price range that aren't "too" snappy and can handle some oil with their out-of-box surface treatment (though you could always change the surface on another ball):

- Columbia Outburst

- Ebonite Gamechanger

- AMF Grip

- Hammer Arson

- Roto Grip Outlaw

- Track 300T

I'm sure that others can add more recommendations, but that's what immediately came to mind. There are plenty of options available. Have fun!

** On Edit: I wrote "AMF Hook" when I meant to say "AMF Grip". The Grip and Outburst might be a little too strong.

First, don't pay attention to any provincial idiot who tells you to avoid a ball because it's made in a country other than here.  There are so many holes in that theory, it's not worth discussing.

Second, wake/grow up.  How in the hell do you expect us to recommend a ball for you if we can't see how you bowl, know what your PAP is, axis tilt, etc.  You have a 220+ team mate?  Listen to him.  Watch what other people are throwing in your house.  Go to a pro shop. Listen to them.

From what you've described your going to need two balls at least.  One for heavy oil, one for light oil.  Should be obvious.

From what it sounds, at least 2 balls are in order.  Potentially 3.  All of the manufacturers put out good equipment these days.

If you go Storm/Roto Grip, you could check out the Outlaw (medium-heavy), Marvel (medium-heavy), Rising Star (medium-light), Tropical Heat pearl (medium-light).

If you go within the Ebonite family of companies, you could always go with the Game Breaker (medium-heavy), Track 503C (medium), Track 300T (medium-light), Ebonite Cyclone (light-medium), Hammer Arson (medium-heavy), Hammer Vibe (medium-light.)

However, before you consider ANY ball, I strongly recommend that you visit a good pro shop and discuss your game with them.  Better shops will make you go out on the lanes and throw what you have to see what your game is.  That is extremely important as it increases the chance that your equipment will actually work the way it is supposed to for you.  You will also get suggestions specific for what you need.

Even though we have given you some general suggestions, we in the forum cannot give you concrete choices for what will work on your game since we cannot see how you are bowling (unless you put it up on YouTube or something similar.)

Note: The best advice is to repeat what I said earlier.  It's important to find a good pro shop with a driller that will take you on the lanes.  The better shops will do this.  If the shop you go to does not do this, you could possibly end up with equipment that will not work for what you specifically need.

Also, keep in mind that if you have stuff drilled wrong and need it redrilled, you'll be spending a quick $40-60 or more, depending on what's needed to plug/redrill the ball.  That's why it's so important to take the time and do it right.

My arsenal
Heavy Oil: Storm Virtual Gravity Nano: 2000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium-Heavy Oil: Ebonite Vital Energy: 4000 AB
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished
Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished

Rigt now every company is making relatively good stuff. Thinking the best advise is to talk to the proshop. But here is my two cents. I would keep the groove as your "light" oil ball, the reign supreme, hyroad, victory road, tracks 716C, motiv's sigma tour is phenomenal, hell the hammer vibes are even good for medium. Heavy oil the VG nano, critcal theory, 919C there's just so many and your proshop should be able to drill anything to suit your needs.

Why do some people feel the need to attack some one on this forum for not knowing there stats?! F***ING irritating.

+1 ... Loop Zero, I agree. KYD is a new member here that just joined at the time of his question and was only asking a simple question because he didn't know the answer and he certainly didn't deserved to be attacked over it. What a welcome to a site for a new member.

KYD, other than the one person that attacked you, the others have offered suggestions. If any further problems, go over and join BBE as you will get only friendly advice over there. That site is well moderated and  attacks aren't allowed over there.

You two guys make my point exactly.  None of you guys have seen the OP bowl.  You don't know his style.  He seems to know nothing about how his ball rolls.  He wants ONE ball that he will be able to roll on oil and on the dry.  He has a 220+ avg bowler giving him tips who could probably recommend a ball, but he want's to listen to people he doesn't know and don't know diddly about him.   I told him get to a pro shop.  But you two anonymous internet Bowling Coaches of the Year can magically tell him what ball to get?  Oh wait, you didn't.  You told him to get to a pro shop also.  You chose to coddle him, I didn't.  This should have been put in the Beginners forum in the first place.  Have a great day.

You'll probably want 2-3 balls, like everyone else is saying, but I wouldn't buy them both right away.

I would say get one ball, take some lessons and let your instructor and/or driller (even better if it's the same person) advise you on your next ball purchase.

As far as what ball, I would get something medium for now and compliment it with a heavier latter on.  I would just go to your local pro shop and see what they have on clearance and start with that.  Every staffer is going to try to convince you to go with their brand, but it doesn't make a whole lot of difference in the end, everyone makes pretty good balls now.  You could also search here for used balls for significantly less than what you'd pay for a new one.

Just go with someone relatively mainstream: Storm/RG, Ebo/Track/Colombia/Hammer, 900G/AMF, Lane1, Motiv.  I personally wouldn't go with Brunswick or DV8 but it doesn't have anything to do with the quality of their product, as they are right up there with everyone else.

It's really hard to recommend an exact ball because there are so many out there and we don't know much about your style, but if you can narrow it down to a few different ones we can be much more helpful.

Thanx for the ideas on the balls, and im not worried about what people have to say on here. Opinons are like assholes, everyones got one and they all stink. And i plan on getting a ball for each lane condition but im not about to go dump $400 on just bowling balls...ive got my motorcycle and atv to put that kind of money into. Im going to snag a ball for MEDIUM TO HEAVY oil cuz my Groove Urethane does just fine on dry to medium lanes. And ill have it drilled to my exact style of bowling. i bought my Groove back when i just started to throwing a "hook" shot and didnt know what kind of style i had yet. But now i do so i have a good idea on what to tell the shop.
My friend i bowl with gets good deals on Motiv bowling balls but ive yet to try one of those out. And im taking the suggestions that you all have given me into consideration. Im sure ill find something that works for me in my price range.
My average for the past two years has hovered in the mid 180's and this past friday i shot a 654 series with my "shitty" brunswick lol. The people i bowl with arent really into bowling as a competition and only a few the bowlers there have reactive balls and that actually do it as sport and not just for fun, so i cant just go asking people what they think is a good ball cuz i probly know more about the sport then they do.
