I need help
« on: June 07, 2004, 06:41:47 PM »
I am having a bad pain in my elbow.  It is around the area where the muscle on the top of the forearm conntects to the top side of the elbow.  I know that it is being cause by how I am coming out of the ball.

Has anyone else experienced this?  What could be causing it?  How do I fix it or is there one?  What about the straps I see guys wearing on their forearms would that help?

Hey Card79,

A couple of things can be causing this if it's what I'm used to seeing from my experience.  One thing is the possibility of squeezing or using too much muscle in your swing.  Another possibility is the actual weight of the ball, it may be starting to get a little too heavy for you causing the strain.  Either one is a sign of muscle/tendons or ligaments starting to weaken usually stemming from over use and/or strain.

I've recommended to my customers and usually helps is the elbow support or splint.  The splint is the full longer piece that straps on from your wrist area up to and below your elbow connected by a bar that lays on your forearm.  Either one of these should help to some degree because it will help subdue the muscle/tendon from expanding and contracting too much from applying excessive muscle use.  If your pain persists after trying one of the aids, I'd definitely recommend seeing your doctor.  Hope this helps....

I am throwing 16 pound equipment, but I would not guess that to be the problem.  Even with the pain in the elbow I still lift weights all the time and while not lifting at the level I once did in college.  I still bench press nearly 400 pounds.  Now squeezing the ball or even grabbing at it at the bottom of the swing to really try to rev it up could be the problem.

Card, I once had the same problem.  Used one of the splints that Rick describes and it solved the problem.  I think what caused mine was a hand position I was using.  I was putting my hand so far behind the ball that the back of my hand was turned in, towards my body.  For me it wasn't ball weight either - I'm a pretty strong guy myself.

I've experienced the same kind of pain this last season. I purchased a really good tennis elbow brace that has worked great for me. Here's a link to the cheapest place on earth to buy them. Plus, I know you're a big guy (cause I read your profile back before you got mad), I never could find a brace that would fit my forearm until this one. It's the second one down, made by Valeo for tennis elbow.

Thanks King maybe it wouldn't hurt to have the grip thing revisited.  I am still using same spans and drillings as when I started about 2 or 3 years ago

Ken I have seen everyone wearing these things like this.  Maybe I should try one.  Profile is not so much mad anymore it is lazy.  I better work on it though before sawmill sees it and yells at me.

Card, yeah, the braces the proshops carry won't even strap around my arm, but this one fits great and it's like $5 plus a couple for shipping.

I hear ya I have the same problem.  I went to the local sports store and the girl tried to tell me one size fits all.  I looked at her and she said well most normal people.  Ah to be a youth again.

LOL.

Oh by the way, I'm also trying some variations on my thumb and finger pitches. The brace may alleviate some or all of the discomfort until you can get the root of the problem solved.

This link is to the elbow brace I've used.  I was able to bowl pain-free and I'm healed (but this thing won't leave my bowling bag EVER).

Price varies by website.
