I need help with my game(vid inside)
« on: May 23, 2005, 05:12:01 PM »
Hi All,
Its me again, I need severe help with my timing and backswing...seems like I just get worse and worse.  I don't want my backswing so high and I keep doing something funky at the top.  I numbered each shot for reference if needed in you guys comments, so let me know, they would be greatly appreciated.  As a forewarning there is an expletive at the end of one of my shots that I didn't catch until after I edited the vid(Its just one though)  But please bring the critique on, I need it.

Thanks a lot,

One thing I notice is your index finger comes away from the ball at the top of your swing.

And you did the ROBOT.  That's always a no-no after a good shot.

The only thing I can really tell you that might help with the high back-swing is this... try keeping the ball lower in your beginning stance. This way, when you push out on your first step then let the ball swing back it won't have as much momentum, therefore not swinging as high on the backswing. And mad props on the robot attempt... just get better at it before you pull that dance off in a league!

What I can tell and could be a point to check out:
1) It looks as if you drop your shoulder, and therefore bend your body forward. As a result you seem to "hobble" a bit at the foul line, being slightly out of balance? Might feel natural, but I'd recommend keeping the upper body more upright.

2) The second-to-last step is very quick. It seems to be the result of a timing problem. I am no pro in this point, but maybe you accelerate your forward swing very early, pushing your footwork out of timing and balance. The "hobble" mentioned before could be the final result of this.

What to to? I'd recommend to slow down the swing, making it the natural cadence for your footwork. This might not be easy, since you play very fast and with force (typical stroker advice... I know), but I think your off-timingh comes from this fast forward swing?

Hope this helps? It is very subjective...

Your follow through seems a bit pronounced. Maybe that's a product of your fast arm swing. If following through is something that you're thinking about as you bowl, you need to be more concerned with your hand position as you release because you go from being behind the ball to the side, shot to shot. A bad follow through  is going to affect your accuracy. Playing the line you played in the video you're going to deal with a lot of over/under.

Just an addition: slowing down the swing might also help to keep your shoulder "closed". I suppose you muscle your whole swing, since you open up your hand with the ball on top of the backswing. Just let the ball drop by its own wait when you start your pushaway and let it naturally generate its speed through the pendulum and your steps.

Take it slow - sounds easy, but it is tricky, especially when you are used to some power in your approach.

You CAN accelerate your swing, but only in the final section of your delivery: when the thumb is gone from the ball (approximately at ankle height).

See what getting your pushaway going a little quicker does.  You seem to dig the ball down a bit, a problem i have had for a while, and getting the swing started should help it come down a bit smoother.
