I'm looking for a heavy oil skid flip ball. My cell is strong but smooth I
want something strong throughout the lane and violent on the back. I was
looking into the virtual gravity, and before I just went and grabbed it I
wanted to post here to see if there is anything that deserves a look. I throw
between 15-16mph med revs and I track kinda high. I have most of my stats in
my profile. Any recommendations?

Uprising or No Mercy Beat'n or maybe whup'n (drilled correctly)..
I don't have either so I am just throwing it out there. I was recommended the uprising when I was looking for a skid flip ball. It was brand new and didn't want to pay that much at the time ..
I'm wanting to get a beat'n or whup'n.. according to the BTM ball review chart the beat'n is the most backend ball(more backend rating then any other ball) , Ball with more Hook but slightly less back end is the morich Awesome hook.. but it has alot less length at 500 grit.. not sure what it would do at a higher grit.. not familiar with mo-rich
Most skid/flip I think would be Hammer Venom or Track kinetic. I went with the Track Kinetic. Big backend, not angular but that is they way I drilled it..neither are for heavier oil though.
If you want a link to the ball review chart pm me.. I can't find the link right now. It is pretty usefull in looking for a certain type of ball or comparing balls against eachother.

Ogre SS is a ture skid snap from what I have seen. Also a Storm Paradigm domination was always mentioned as being pretty skid snap.

The Virtual Gravity is the most angular solid I've ever thrown, and it also requires more head oil to get it down the lane than any ball I've ever thrown. But once it finds friction, it goes left in a hurry!
-
For true skid flip, wouldn't you want a pearl (skid through the oil and react hard to the backend friction)?

Even drilled RICO, my Playmaker is borderline skid/flippy.

In that case I would say the Cell Pearl with a 4x4 drilling with 1.5" pin buffer. Pin up

Original Track Kinetic not a Pearl but great for skid snap, and will handle some heavy oil.

900 Global's Break Pearl is one of the stonger pearls I've thrown...wouldn't really say it's a heavy oil ball for me, but I don't have a lot of hand.

my opinion is go pearl or close to it. cell pearl, gravity shift, hyroad, buzzbomb r, or track up rising. most of the storm line works great. the virtual gravity is designed to be angular in heavy oil, so if the lanes don't have alot of head oil it will pick up to early.

Same here, Steve. I have a couple pearls with weak/smooth layouts that still have a skid-flip reaction. Coverstock is still the primary factor in ball reaction

There is no such thing as a skid-flip ball for heavy oil. There is no way to get "strong throughout the lane and violent on the back." The Virtual Gravity is a great ball, but it's not going to do the impossible. It has a nice mid-lane read and a strong, continuous backend.
Give up your search and work on your game. Try playing a straighter angle for a change. Move right and ball down if you want more entry angle. That, or change your hand position and increase your axis rotation.

Hey rev, easy there fella. I'm working on my game, and I also play straight quite often. When I said "strong throughout..." nice-midlane read and strong continuous is like the same to me. What i'm trying to do is get a ball right under the cell, I have an acid and it's archy as well. I have the ogre ss and I like it where it's at really long and snappy, it's too long to bring out after the cell. I want a med-heavy skid/flip or more angular than the cell. Heck I might be able to play that straighter angle you mentioned with it. Sorry if I offended you.

Dude, you didn't offend me in any way -- I'm just trying to tell you that you won't be able to get a true skid-flip reaction on heavier, longer volumes, and that you'd be better served with something that gives you some mid-lane roll, etc. The Virtual Gravity is more angular than the Cell. I'm not arguing that... it's just the precision of your description in your initial request that I'm questioning.
Hope this helps... and that you understand where I'm coming from.

Most all of Track's stuff is skid/flip. My game isn't that much different than what you describe (just slower).
For me the Kinetic Pearl goes down the lane without over-reading the mid-lane and then makes its turn. You can talk to your pro shop, or contact a regional rep. from Track, they should be able to make some good suggestions.
The question that I would have is whether you really mean that you want the ball to read the mid-lane (my interpretation of "strong")? It sounds like that is what your Cell is doing already.
The idea behind skid/flip, as I understand it, is to avoid the mid-lane read as much as possible and therefore avoid yet another variable.
Somebody else can weigh in on this if they would like.
Good luck on your search.

Look at the Power Swing, Hot Sauce, Rising SE, and Wildride. All those balls are higher end pearls that are designed to give what you are looking for. Also, I sent you a message.

Ok I can see that I didn't give the best desrcription possible and I apologize for the confusion. You guys are right and your advice is well taken. Our pattern is oiled to 38ft and buffed to 41ft, that's the oil i'm talking about. My cell has a very good mid-lane read and nice backend, I just want something that could be like the cell but more angular. My thoughts were that this would come from a skid flip ball. Now I see where your guys' concerns come from, that being my failure to lay out all the facts.
p.s that's why I posted here, because I know that I don't know everything and someone out there could better recommend a ball that might work better. I got just that, or at least an inkling of what could.
Thanks everyone!

from what i've seen from myself and others if you got good amount of rev then the virtual will be a great ball for what ya want if you lack the revs it seems to want to go a few feet to far before it makes it's move to the pocket. I drilled one up for a older guy who throws it pretty hard with little or know hand and drilled it stacked 4x4 and had to end up taking it down to 1000 before it would read the lanes early enough for him me i had to polish mine do to it making to strong of a move
-
"be like the cell but more angular" I'm not sure that you could have described the Cell Pearl any better than that! I think that you've answered your own question!

There are several very good products that fit your new description:
1) Lanemasters Black Pearl Reactive - a very strong backend motion that picks up just enough to still turn the corner on almost anything. Hit is vintage Lanemasters.
2) Roto Grip Cell Pearl - in most cases, it'll cover as many boards as the Cell (it's one STRONG pearl), but it should be longer and stronger off friction.
3) Storm Gravity Shift - not as strong as the Roto Grip Cell Pearl (by 1-4 boards, depending on surface prep, drilling, etc.), but definitely very angular. It's stronger than you Ogre SS, too, so it could be a ball that fits nicely in your arsenal and doesn't leave as much of a defined gap.
4) 900 Global Break Pearl - one of the most angular pearls on the market... 'nuff said.

I think if you for more angular look down the lane I would take the cell pearl off the list. For what I've seen, and the one that I drilled up it's more of a strong arc type reaction pearl. The coverstock has the highest RA numbers of any ball on the market which by that nature is going to make read the mids a little and arc on the back. If your getting a cell to 'flip' on the back, you can probably get more flip out of other balls on the same pattern. The playmaker for a symmetric is very very angular on the back it just seems to generate more angle than a lot of the current releases (on a pattern that will allow the ball to react of course). The downside is that from watching various people use that ball though it can be a little uncontrollable at times for that very reason. It's not a heavy oil ball though which is what your looking for. A Virtual Gravity will give you more angle downlane, especially on a pattern with more volume up front for sure. Being asymmetrical when it see's friction it will be more violent and not as continuous as say a storm dimension which would be earlier and smoother. I wish it wasn't such a ugly ball though, LOL.

To all those that have suggested the cell pearl, I was right there with you in thinking that it would be what I was looking for so I bought one. With the same drilling I got a ball that went long for sure but it was smooth. My grand Illusion had more backend than it did. The guy I sold it to said the same thing. People have suggested the up rising to me and it sounds good, and then I looked into the original rising and that looks like what the doctor ordered. So for anybody that has thrown both how different are the looks?

Your Grand Illusion had more backend???? Drilled the same as the GI, it is just not possible that the Cell Pearl was weaker in the backend, unless the lanes were dryer. Not unless the lanes were toast. The CP, on a med-med heavy condition, is VERY strong on the backend. The GI needs true mediums to shine.

You said you like the Visionary Ogre SS but its too long. Try the New Breed Pearl it reads earlier than the Ogre for me with more angle into the pocket.

There's a ton. The newest ones would be the Rising SE, 2nd Dimension appears to be crazy on the back end, Virtual Gravity and Hot Sauce Pearl. There are also a ton of others for a wide range of oil like the Break Pearl, all of the Widows are pretty skip/flip, The Playmaker and the Emerald Vibe is very long and strong for the price. Take your pick there really is no "right" answer.
-
Golf,
No lie my grand illusion with a 5x3 exactly like my cell and cell pearl had more on the back. When the cell started to check up the pearl just kept going no snap all arc, smooth arc. I had to take the polish off the GI and put it at 2k to calm it down. I won't to call it a bad ball but maybe I should have went with another drilling.
-
I had an original widow with the skid/flip layout, the thing had stupid backend.
I sold it at the time because I didn't care for the hook 20 boards @ 50 ft.

I've got a cell pearl its pin above ring finger 4 1/4pin to pap 60x40 It reads lane a little sooner than most pearls i've had. It certainly is the strongest pearl i've had or seen, but on the the backend its snaps and just plows the pins. Its never even thought of arcing.
