RAFFLES .. STOP AND THINK!
« on: May 16, 2005, 02:18:20 PM »
I hate to say this .. but something is NOT RIGHT! The one raffle where there are 10 entries for $14 that will allow a choice of balls OTHER THEN LANE 1 seems to me quite HONEST! Looking at BLOCKBUSTERBOWLING.com as a guide .. high performance balls run (undrilled) about an average of $130 delivered. Taking in $140 puts the person running the raffle just about RIGHT!

Now we go to these others where there are 20 entries at $15 or one where there are 500 entries at $10 are a little outrageous. A person could see it as THE BALL ONLY WOULD COST ME 15/10 bucks .. but look at:

1. the number of entries cuts down your chances;
2. the person running the raffle would not be able to sell the ball for the total he collects from the raffle;
3. in some cases the person running the raffle is suggesting that the winner will pay SHIPPING!

COME ON .. lets be reasonable! I'm a SUCKER for a GOOD DEAL .. but PLEASE don't pull the wool over my eyes.

Not meant to be offensive .. but feel embarrassed watching something's go on!

it says with beans:
quote:
Each chance will cost $10 each. (1) Ball will be given away for every 30 paid chances

beans also gives
quote:
You will receive (2) FREE chances for every (2) paid chances you take

so if everyone goes with two free chances the money received becomes $150. 20 bucks for a better than 1:9 ratio for getting the ball. also
quote:
ALL LOSING BIDDERS WILL RECEIVE (1) BOX OF BOWLING TAPE AS A SECOND PLACE PRIZE... EVERY BODY WILL RECEIVE SOMETHING FOR THEIR BIDS.

the shipping was for outside the lower 48 states.

whats wrong with this again?

EVERY 30 PAID CHANCES leaves me to think that for every two BOUGHT there will be a POSSIBLE three tickets in the POT! Therefore with 30 PAID CHANCES there could be 45 possible tickets to choose from.

It amounts to $300 collected for each raffle .. then the winner pays for SHIPPING!

Don't you see that you can buy one for (app) $186 and do your own raffle and make a clean $100 .. sure you can win a $186 buck ball for $10 if you're the lucky 1 out of 30 .. and the raffle runner walks off with a fast $100 (and that's not considering how much was initially paid for the ball!)

I make these comments before the raffles are complete .. some will only look at the 10/15 bucks they are investing .. good luck to you!

yeah personally i dont like the complexity and the wording of the beans raffle

i dont know if he means 30 total chances(paid and freely earned) or 30 paid + freely earned....REALLY stacks against the single ticket buyer.

sometimes being simple is the better way of running things...and probably why it wont take off like iketowns

ps after posting previously i was thinking about the 1 ball every 30 paid tickets and if those paid tickets include freely earned tickets(technicalities)

I don't think your math adds up (or maybe mine doesn't??), but I'm looking at it this way:
Every 30 paid chances a ball will be given away.  1 chance is $10.  30 PAID chances x $10 per chance = $300.
Now, if you pay for 2 chances ($20) you will get 2 "free chances."
If every participant pays for 2 chances, you will have 15 people in the drawing - 30 paid chances / 2 chances per person = 15 people.  Those would be 1:15 chance of winning.  Now, each person that buys 2 chances gets 2 more chances for free (effectively making each person with 4 chances), so 4 x 15= 60.  Still the odds are 1:15.  You have 60 chances in the drawing, but each person has the same number of chances.

Nowhere does it say that each drawing is limited to 30 chances.  It might be different if buying 2 chances would get you 2 free chances in a different drawing, and if each drawing was limited to 30 chances.

BTW - I'm not in this drawing, I haven't even seen the original post about this raffle, so if something I've said isn't correct don't take offense.  I'm only going on what I've seen in this thread.

And really it doesn't matter cuz I see thfonz98 posted again before I submitted this!

I don't see anything wrong with Bean doing the raffle.  If these balls are that rare and worth something, he could just put them on eBay and make his money.  At least this way somebody will win one for a small investment (and then probably put it on eBay and make money!)

He's also covering the cost for the boxes of tape he is giving to all 2nd place winners(everyone that didn't win the ball).

honestly it's just like a lottery, i don't really see anything Wrong with it. it's like your half and half at a league or your state lottery.
