Measuring ball speed

I was trying to figure out how to measure ball speed. Obviously you would divide distance by the time it takes for the ball to get down and then convert feet / sec to mph by multiplying by 1.466.  What if you throw a ball that arcs, clearly the distance it is traveling is more then 60 feet.  Is this difference negligible or does it just prove you cant accurately measure speed without lanes that measure it for you?

Throw the ball in a straight line with a plastic ball to take the measurement of max speed.

When comparing strike balls, use 60 feet as your divisor.  The difference would be negligible I would think....or just bring a radar gun with you
