I was voted in as Secretary/Treasurer for our league coming up soon in fall. Person holding this position previously stated they would contact me. Well no contact. I am going to keep trying, but if I cannot get hold of this person, what can I do to get things in order for the first night?

Talk to the president.

You may be the better bowler, but my car would blow the doors off of yours.

You may want to contact your local association manager also.. He/She should be able to get you all the information/materials that you need for sanctioning and getting your league started.
Per chance, do you have a copy of the league's rules from last year? That would help you greatly also.. If you don't, then hopefully the league president (as mentioned above) would be able to help with that.

Being a league secretary myself, I not only give a copy of the rules to all team captains, but also President and vice President of the league. I also give a copy to the house just so they can have one.
If your looking for names and phone #'s the local association should have all that stuff, give them a call and ask for there help

I think the TREASURER part of the job may require you to get in contact with prior officer. Usually there are BANK ACCOUNTS that run continual ..may have to speak to your President!

Talk to your local association, they may have a secretary workshop you can go to before your winter league starts
Go to bowl.com and download the League Operations Manual. They used to give you one each year, but USBC has discontinued the paper copy. It has the award forms in it, and basic secretary/treasurer instructions. It is a VERY important source of information and USBC is really stupid for eliminating the papercopy.
Look into getting software to run your league. Two main companies Bowling League Secretary and Perfect Secretary. I believe at least one of them has a demo you can download. These programs will make it infinately easier to do your job.
Remember that the Sec/Tres gets paid. Usually a small amount per bowler per week. But your league might have a history of a flat fee. Contact a prior officer for a copy of your prior league rules. Rules need to be voted in each year anyway. Any Sec/Tres can help you, doesn't have to be a prior one for your league. If you have your league rules then all you need is some guidence from a knowledgable source might be from a different league.

Am I mistaking when I say that (in most bowling Centers) score sheets/tally sheets/scoring records (which use to be done by secretaries) is now done by Bowling Centers? I'm not even sure if Secretaries submit for awards (most are cut out any way). Secretary duties are reduced to distribution of weekly forms and collection of recap sheets that are turned over to desk! Yes they get approval of RULES which in 99% of the time is approval of prior years!
Now TREASURER gets involved with FUNDS which to me is a little more RISKY/IMPORTANT! Assuring cash is correct/chasing delinquents/making deposits/doing Audits with President/getting prize fund approved/and distribution at season end.
Why are we putting such emphasis on SEC when the TRES is the job to worry about!
Please correct me and show me the WAY!

Joe -- You're right, the treasurer is the most important job in the league. But normally the jobs are combined, secretary/treasurer. If the sec/treas does the job right, the president and vice president are just figure heads. The pres's most important job is to confirm the treas is doing the job right. -- JohnP

Actually the Pres should be ruling on all discrepancies, rules violations/questions that kind of thing as well.

The President is also responsible for a monthly audit of all league funds. keep in mind that the sec/tres is a job, and you are not the end all be all for all disputs etc.....that's what the President and other officiers are there for.
Many centers around here do NOT do the stats for the secretaries. Some do and some don't. What's going to be a disaster is that about 1/2 our secretaries are NOT online. So all of the materials that USBC says "go to bowl.com" is inaccesable.

Just a thought on this subject .. I can see leagues paying for TREASURY duties but (assuming House does all sec duties) I'd have a hard time approving paying for a bowler doing Sec duties! It is RIGHT to combine the jobs (i.e., SEC/TRES)! Is there still a PAID SEC on leagues (where the house is doing the job)?
