Info on regionals
« on: July 03, 2011, 01:56:56 PM »
Hi all, can someone please explain the format of pba regionals. As far as how many games are the qualifiers, how many make the cut, and how does the tournament proceed after day 1. Is it then head to head? Single elimination? 1 game or series? Thanks in advance for helping a rookie bowler make sense of it! I'm ready to enter one in a couple of months just to get the experience and get my tail whipped. I don't care if I'll just be donating, I can't find any pbax leagues around here and the ths shot is getting old, quick. I believe I read you must have a 200+ avg on a ths or 190 on sport, which I have covered. If there's any other red tape, other than not being scared to get schooled, please advise. Thanks again!

Not all are the same, but in the Southwest anyway they normally are set up like this.

Practice for 2 hours on Friday.

8 games of qualifying on Saturday

5 games of semis on Sunday morning for the top 1/3 of the field.

Match play on Sunday afternoon for top 16. Matches vary in number of games as step ladder moves. Think it is 2 out of 3 to start, then ends with one game matches.

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't been able to find anything on the web that broke it down.

Tex, as far as the 8 game qualifier, is it total pins from all 8 games and top 1/3 move on to semis? You say it's a 5 game semi, is that total pins again and certain percentage move on to head to head finals where step ladder starts from lowest 5 game series up or all total of 13 game series?

One last question, if you make it past qualifier and your top 1/3 and move to day 2 and semis aren't you gauramteed pay back?

Thanks again!

One thing you can do is look at the results of previous regional events.

Here is a Wichita, Ks regional.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I won't be last at least! Lol someone averaged in the 150's.

Are there typically well known bowlers at all regionals as there was at the one posted above? It would be neat to bowl along side guys like Hess, weber, barnes, and rash. Sure it'll be expensive, but what other sport can you compete against the best without being a "professional"!

With the decline of the national tour you will see more of them bowling regionals during the off season.

With the Wichita State program many of the bowlers came thru that program and return to bowl here.

Barnes, Steelsmith, Rash, Waliczek, etc all bowled WSU in the past. I'm sure since they probably infuenced Weber and others to come and bowl.

There were several names in there that I recognize from past WSU teams.

Yes total pins for the 8 games. The top 1/3 then rolls another 5 and the total of the 13 games is used for the top 16. If you look at Cabot, Ark you will see only the top 8 advancing to finals but that is due to low turnout. That is a new tournament, but surprised so few went up there.

I've got my eye on the one in Duncan, ok scheduled for Sep. 16th. Anyone been to this one before? Assuming they've scheduled there in the past. On the site they don't have any info yet as far as oil pattern or anything. It's just the closest to me. Looks like I'll be driving to TX if I want to do very many, or maybe KS. Anyone on here familiar with the South region have any insight on ones to go to or ones to avoid?

As far as I know the Duncan is new. The tournament in Ft. Smith is a great event and if my back allows I will be there. Love the center, but competition will be fierce. Never been under at that tournament and never got close to cashing. Plano in August is the next big one, but again it normally draws plenty of tour players and scoring is high at anything there. Once I see how my back is after a flair up from a couple weeks ago, I will make the decision on bowling that one in August. Something like the newer events might work out for first event.
