I stink on house shots

/rant on

Last night in league I'm trying out my brand new Dyno-thane Crisis.  I'm matched up against this one guy, who works in the pro shop, a severe Columbia Ball of the Month Club patron. He was throwing the Detour and Alter Ego.

I shoot 202, 204, 240 with one open in each game.  He shoots 190, 225, 220.  I barely got him on series but it should never have been close.  I'm not the board splitter I wish I was, but good lawd at least I get close to what I'm looking at!  This guy fires it up 15, smash!  13 at the arrows to the 2 board, smash.  18 at the arrors to 10, smash.  Yes, I was watching, yes, he did that... and then he puts his hand out for me to give him five after each shot.

He's a nice enough guy, but it seems if I missed right I got tapped.  If I got it inside a little I left the 6-10.  Granted he didn't shoot the lights out the house, but it amazes me how some people's game is very conducive to house shots.  While others, mainly me, have difficulty matching up on that.

I never think I should score better than I did, if I didn't carry I wasn't playing the lanes right.  But why does it feel that some people have adapted to house conditions better than me?  Am I the only one to feel this?

I am with ya Tony.  I have seen guys shoot 7's here lately hitting anywhere from 4th arrow to 2nd arrow and still striking away.  I am not as accurate as I should be, but shoot I don't seem to have much room at all.  I don't know what causes it.

I don't really play cards and I am not 79, but it fits together somehow.

It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Some people are able to create a larger area to the pocket, while others seem to have less area. Today's game is about matching up to the lane conditions. Some can create a larger area with equipment and some have a larger area using angle of entry. Guys who open up the shot as compared to guys who play straighter up the boards. Watch the guys who score well and try to play close to the same area of the lane. If you got a good pro shop guy explain to him what you want to do and he should be able to drill you up so equipment that will create a larger area to the pocket. Note ball out of box don't always work just right, that why it's very important to adjust the coverstock till you get the reaction that matches up the the shot. Carry is another story.

Hey Tony, maybe you need to pick up a Detour and an Alter Ego.  Then you, too, can throw the ball anywhere on a THS and strike.

Like they say, it's not how, it's how many.

Maybe Columbia balls just work better on house shots???

Bob, thanks for that insight on the oil line.  I used to be able to play the oil line but lately havent been able to.  When I try to swing the ball out to the dry area like other bowlers do, I get too much backend reaction and when I try to keep it in the oil longer then it seems to hit the pocket too weak.

On the THS, I am averaging 194 and 197.  On the sport shot league, I am averaging 194, so I am not seeing the expected 16 pin drop in average on the sport patterns.  I actually prefer the sport shot over the THS, except for the short oil pattern we get every fourth month.

So I would have to say that I am having problems with the THS pattern also and can sympathize with Tony on this.

The house shot loves me!!!!!  40 ft of oil is the house shot at a local bowling alley, and i can now shoot on that all day.  I can shoot fairly decent on the men's shot also 42-44ft of oil.

I play house shots so much that i dont really know how to shoot on anything else, i guess i need more leauge experience.

Jabroni, they call it the "sport" shot, one of the lane attendants was telling me about it. They use that same pattern for all the men's leauges in the house.  And the other short side is for teh women's and mixed leauges... i didnt get particulars on the lay out.  Nor could my noob self understand them.

But then again i need more leauge experience... all i shoot on is house shots.  Open bowling loves me.
