Title: I support the USBC because...
Post by: mainzer on February 14, 2011, 03:29:30 AM
Why do support the USBC? Just like the annoying commercial that airs during PBA Events.
I Support the USBC because...their are no unsanctioned Scratch/Sport/Money leagues in the area. I also support the USBC Because I like to bowl tournements and for some I need a sanctioned average.

They are the only game in town. That may well be unfortunate for those of us who bowl sanctioned tournaments.

Because without a governing body, chaos will ensue.

So I was watching the USBC Masters yesterday and as they were showing the USBC President and the CEO/Director on the telecast, my wife walks in the room, looks at the TV and says "So those are the people who lick the envelopes and send you the fridge magnets????"
To which I could only reply "Yup...after they are done with the tournament they're gonna get back to sending those magnets out..."

Be nice if they paid attention to your average before they sent those things out, or sent them to you for something real. Like somebody averages 190 and they get a 600 magnet, or a 225 game magnet . . why? If you average 190, you'll shoot 600 probably 1/3rd of the time, and have tons of games over 225.
That's just like, your opinion, man.

I'm a member because I have to, but I never got no friggin' magnet!!! Geez, somebodies holding out. Btw, those jerseys are ugly, but my kids wear Em at home because they're comfortable and no one can see them. Lol.
I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not.

It costs so much for sanction fees and Nationals entry fees and I get nothing in return.

That's a lousy excuse. I bowl in a non-sanctioned league and we have no chaos. It took a good bit of work to write our rules but the only chaos we have is the center's equipment at times. IMO it's just an excuse for people who don't really want to write rules, and 'go it alone'.
If you don't want my opinion, don't ask. If you don't like my opinion, ignore my posts. Have A Nice Day .

You have no chaos because everyone uses USBC rules to govern play.
Un-sanctioned leagues could come up with any rule they wanted. No fouls, 8+ pins count as strikes, etc.
What would ball companies do without certification? Pin manufactures?
Houses already cheat on lane patterns, what about pulling in the kick boards? Raising the gutters?
Without some santioning governing body everything is fair game. It is bad enough as it is and the BPAA is taking over.

And the bashing of someones opinion is one reason I don't frequent this site much anymore.
I stated my reason. It may not be yours but it is mine.
And bowlers are cheap b*asterds.

I bowl USBC because of the BONDING. (said in that anoying kid with the jersey voice)
Rules play a big part also.
Bowling is like life. Sometimes you are the ball. Other times you are the pins.

I am a member because; They provide at least some form of rules to try and keep things on some path. They maintain the national average database ( I also am a tournament promoter/manager), the bonding can be a big deal if you get a bad secretary or a bad spouse of the secretary or president (had one rip off a nice league a few years back), I actually believe they have the best for the sport in their hearts, just don't know how to get there.
I believe un-sanctioned leagues should be banned and bowlers who participate should be suspended. That is so we can have more discussions..:-)
I have refused to take over a large tournament in the area because they refuse to sanction. This is a youth and with the rules that mandate how scholarships are maintained they won't sign up. Now they don't mind putting USBC rules apply in the tournament rules though. That alone should be grounds for USBC having some type of action against them.

Interesting. Would you suggest that non-sanctioned softball or baseball leagues pay money to MLB, or that pick-up basketball games and three man tourneys pay money to the NBA. How about non-sanctioned golf leagues/tourneys? I could go on, but the point is, all of those activities also play by the rules established by a major sanctioning entity, yet nobody complains or questions sanctioning those events. Why should bowling be any different?

I bowled in a non-sanctioned sport league a few years ago. I believe it was still USBC sanctioned, though. It was more money to sanction the sport league on top of the regular fees. I personally believe in this instance it really worked out for the league. Sure, no one was going to get a special sport bowling ring for shooting a 300 or 800, but the chance was pretty slim for the group of bowlers.
As far as non-sanctioned leagues, I have no problem with this either. They come up with their own set of rules and everyone is on board. You shoot a 300, well, then you don't get a USBC ring. If the league provides another award, fine, but that has to be spelled up front. If you think about many of the USBC rules, some of them still refer to league rules for guidance.
I just don't think the USBC and local associations are doing enough to make sure at the center level that centers, leagues, and tournaments are up to the rules.

I was on the Dallas board for a long time. I remember a story that they used to love to tell and even try to get someone bowling in a non-sanctioned league to do. Its your turn to bowl, so you walk down the lane to about 15 feet from the head pin and throw your ball. Then walk back. Now of course everyone yells you fouled. You say who says thats a foul. Now the first thing out of someones mouth will be the "ABC/USBC" rules say you can't cross the foul line. You answer, This league is not sanctioned by USBC, so the rules don't apply. Argument insues of course. So next argument the bowler uses is show me where it is illlegal, then the rule book is pulled out. Sorry can't use that book, you chose not to sanction. They threaten to call and ask about a ruling. Who you going to call. You are not sanctioned. I can knock the pins over with my hands if I want to.
Now we all know this has never happened and never will. The old guys in the association used to love telling this like it really did. But is it a good point as to one reason that you want your leagues sanctioned? So in case of a dispute, you have someone to call. Someone to step in and make an official decision or to make sure that bowler that refuses to pay or play by the rule is dealt with or suspended..

Heres what USBC really means:
U----USELESS
S----SELFISH
B----BOGUS
C----CONGLOMERATE
Glad to see mt $21 goes for a 10 cent magnet...a few years ago when ABC ran the organization and i left a smash 9 for a 299 ABC was gracious enough to give me a ring....now if that happens USBC will send me a hideous looking trophy, which to their credit is better than the abominal looking $0.38 looking plague they did give but hey their the only act and what choice is there if you want to bowl in tournaments and leagues???

Um, you do realize that means that the league was sanctioned. Not sure how you can pay USBC santion and the additional amount to upgrade to sport but not be sanctioned?

Kind of tough to use this arguement considering the PBA, NOT USBC would be the equivalent to those. About the only valid one there is the non-sanctioned golf leagues, and the USGA. But then again, a portion of every USGA membership goes to the PGA.

I thought of that, but what organization lies in any other sporting event between the Professionals and the everyday Joe's that form leagues? Excluding School organizations. Bowling is the only one I can think of.

lol Hampster.. omfg..... so i totally forgot about this till i read your post..... so about a month ago, i come in for league, and our team is talking and the league secretary comes by and drops off a few of the magnets.... and I get the big 225game magnet lol...... I am like seriously WTF am i suppose to do with this????? another guy got a 250magnet, and such......
it's like i really dont see why they send out stuff like this???? I mean i could see if someone with a 160-170avg shoots 275 or more...... but 225?? i think @ the time i was like a 197avg too....
