I think my bowling days are done
« on: September 11, 2009, 10:36:54 AM »
I started the year with a sore knee.  I've bowled 5 sets, all with a rather large brace on and the knee is worse than ever, sore in 2 places.  And the other knee is now acting up.  sigh.

Its tough to get old. I am only in my mid forties and can feel it already.

You can always go see your Doc. and see if there is anything he can do for you.

I would take a look at how low your knee flex is in your delivery. As we get older(I am a also a geezer) a low knee flex will start putting to much stress on the knee. Might need to make an adjustment on this and redo your approach and delivery. May take some time, but might be well worth it. I used to have an approach like Marshall Holmann. Knee starting hurting at a certain age, and even with a light brace eventually did not help. Learned to bowl more upright with less slide and after a period time became pain free and competitive again. Ofcourse check with your doctor as you might have something else going on.

The absolute best thing to do is go to an orthopaedic surgeon, get an assess-
ment, then possibly to a physical therapist, who understands sports injuries,
and try to rehab the knee.  Your bowling days need not be necessarily over.
Good luck.

Do not hit the weights untill you know what the problem is, you could do a
great deal of harm to an already bad situation.  Unlike previous post suggests,
you can fix the knees, almost all problems are improveable.

Sorry to hear this, "Henry". Very sorry.
Have you been to an orthopedist? What did the MRI show?

I'm in the midst of an an ankle tendon tear repair. Not fun. It's as if I just had a cast removed after being on one for 8 freaking weeks.

Don't even ask how I tore the tibial tendon. I have no idea.

Jeff, I've an appointment with my regular Dr. in 10 days, then probably will get an MRI.  I've had trouble with the left knee for years, had it scoped in 1977 and it's never been 100%.  Gazoo, I bowl with almost no knee bend when I'm having this sort of trouble - I've learned to bowl either with a medium bend and longish slide or with no bend and about 1/4th my normal slide.  I'm hoping this is temporary but I've never before had both knees bother me at once, nor have i had the problem going in behind my knee - normally it's been the anterior cruciate that's been the problem.  Well see what happens.

I may be ready to hang it up as well. Bowled the first night of mixed league, using the brace - worked ok, but with a lot of pain.
Second warm up shot in the scratch league - I yelled with pain, shoes came off, and I watched.

I've found a replacement for myself in the big tournament next week. I've never done that. I've bowled injured and sick before -not this time.

I see the orthopedist on Monday - then we get to see what happens from that.

My health insurance sucks - HUGE deductible, but office visits are ok. so - if he can do everything he needs to do in an office, I guess we should be fine.

Sir Ragnar

Now I know you do not like me,   like I care...

However I do know about your love of bowling...

I'm sorry to hear about your knee problems...

I hope your knee gets better and once again you can bowl pain free...

Now back to not liking me...

Good luck to you, Henry and mumzie.

I still bowl (15 years later) with a partial tear in my ACL. During the past year I have hit the gym very hard (5:00am) because I knew if I didn't my bowling career was going to be too short. I do spinning 3 days a week (legs and cardio) and lift the other days, with some time on the eliptical machine.

Right now (nearly 48 years) I feel better than I have for 10 years. I have no need for the daily arthritis medications 90% of the time, which is nice. I won't lie and say it's been easy, because I work my butt off. The rewards are worth it now.

Anyway, I hope after your injuries have subsided, you can do something similar, too, and keep the bowling alive in your lives. Best wishes.

My wife quit bowling last season because of arthritic knee pain.  She took SynVisc shots in the knee, started using a stationary bike, and lost over 50 lbs.  She's back to bowling two leagues this season, still some pain but manageable.  --  JohnP

I know this is crazy and it doesn't help you guys with surgery but for aches and pains this stuff works. Try it for two months if it works . great .. if it doesn't work .. you wasted $40 .. Good luck either way!

CRD--What diagnosis is "normal achy knees"?  See a professional and follow

Good luck, "Henry".

BTW have you tired Glucosamine yet?
A couple of us local guys have had intermittemt knee problems, some right, some left, some sliding, and it does seem to help. Good for lubricating cartilage and rebuilding/replenishing such.

Of course being proper weight and good muscles in thighs does seem to help with repsect to bowling.

I don't want to hijack Henry's thread but anyone ever had their knees make the sound of velcro pulling apart while going up steps?

I don't have any real pain or discomfort while bowling or walking. My chiropractor doesn't have anything bad to say about my knees.

I just get that velcro sound while going up the steps...

Any ideas????
