I was bowling last night when gunshots were fired.
« on: December 14, 2004, 01:50:43 PM »
I was at Whitestone Lanes (in NY) with a few friends practicing late last night when all of a sudden 4-5 gunshots were fired in the building.  Everyone there immediately ducked.  It was silent for 2 minutes.  I couldn't see who did the shooting or if anyone was hit.  People started to get up slowly.  That is when my friends and I grabbed our equipment and started to pack up our stuff.  I threw my shoes and jacket on and all of a sudden people were screaming b/c the guys had come back in.  This is when like 10-12 of us ran to the only exit we could go to.  It was at the back of the lanes by the pins.  We got out and cops came.  I was told that it was about 4-5 guys that came in thru the front shooting and walked out the back entrance.  All my equipment was left inside.  A friend of mine was still in there and the cops wouldn't let anyone out.  I had to leave, my friend took my stuff with him when the cops let him out around 4am.

This I believe is the 3rd shooting in about 10 years there.  The one night I decide to bowl late this garbage happens.

For those that know Tommy Delutz, he works at this alley.  He left around 10pm after the Monday night league was over.

ITS NY FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!!!!

Just kiddin, glad your ok.

I never dreamed it would be me, My name for all eternity, Recorded here at this hallowed place Alas, my name, no more my face. "In the line of duty," I hear them say: My family now the price to pay. My folded flag stained with their tears; We only had those few short years. The badge no longer on my chest, I sleep now in eternal rest. My sword I pass to those behind, And pray they keep this thought in mind. I never dreamed it would be me, And with heavy heart and bended knee, I ask for all here from the past: Dear God, let my name be the last.

Whitestone Lanes?  ... Sheesh, haven't been there in years!  High volume of open bowling there.  You should try Van Wyck Lanes (Jamaica Ave & Van Wyck Expressway).  Especially Weds. nights.  Only $10 after 9 til Closing.  You can bowl as many games as you want.  If you want a tougher shot, try Woodhaven Lanes (on Woodhaven Blvd & Metropolitan Ave).  House has taken many pins from high avg. bowlers.

I bowled some action there last November. Not the nicest part of town. But not too many nice spots nowadays in this world.

Glad to hear you were safe. I would think there is nothing scarier than a gunshot where one is not supposed to be.

Not to hijack, but how is Tommy D coming on his injury? Is he back bowling yet?

I don,t know him other than from watching him on the PBA, but have enjoyed watching him on the show. I just watched the shootout with PDW that I have on tape the other night.(no pun intended)

What?

Yeah I remember that match. Tommy had to go out the door but left a 10 pin, then you saw Pete sink in his chair Baby Jesus wept that day for Tommy D. That had to be the match of the year last season...

thats messed up though, i'm surprised it didnt make the news...oh wait, its only a bowling center. where exactly is Whitestone Lanes again? i've never been there....

Hammer,

It's not to far from the Whitestone Bridge.  If you were traveling from the Bronx, cross Whitestone Bridge, stay right towards Van Wyck/JFK Airport.  Exit Linden Place, make left under expressway and it's right there.  Not far from Shea Stadium.

Well to answer a couple of questions that were asked...Tommy is doing well.  I'm not sure if he is bowling yet but I think he has tried.  He said his wrist is coming along well.

Also, I used to bowl at Woodhaven a few years ago on my high school league.  The lanes are pretty nice.  I never bowled at Van Wyck.

And someone else summed up the location of Whitestone Lanes.  However, it did make Fox 5 news the next morning and was in today's NY Newsday paper (buried on page 34).

Also, I talked to Tommy today b/c I'm on the Wed. night league and he will be in one of those Dexter commercials coming up soon (might be this year or early 2005) along with David Ozio and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard.

It's right off Linden Place and the Whitestone Expressway.  Right by the overpass.  There's the College Point movie theater right next to it - on the otherside of the highway.
