Spine Tilt
« on: February 22, 2016, 03:19:18 AM »
Recently I have noticed that I have an excessive amount of spine tilt, I'm talking about 90*! What are some things for me to try during practice that may help me resolve this issue? Anything would be highly appreciated as always, any thoughts?

Do you mean that you finish at the line bending forward (at the hip) 90 degrees?

Stance, 1st and 2nd step - 10*
3rd step - 45*
4th step 90*
5th step - 95*
When ball is being released - 70*

I'm a two-hander by the way.

Do you keep your shoulders open and swing the ball close to your body?

Yes, ball is close to my body at all times.

Many of us are looking at the arrows for our first target.  What happens is as we get closer to the foul line and our eyes are still at the arrows, our head and torso end up tilted too far.  This may, or may not, be your issue, but don't discount it until you have tried correcting it.

Just focus on maintaining your original spine tilt, and as you get closer to the foul line let your eyes look past the arrows...

In my opinion excessive spine tilt hurts you because the downswing gets too steep, making you either, 1) lose the ball off the hand early, or 2) squeeze too hard so you don't lose the ball early.  Both are killers to a good and repeatable release.

Lane is correct. Although for those who collapse their wrist at release (E. J. Tackett, Wes Malott, J. Belmonte, etc.), having more, rather then less forward spine tilt allows them to rotate their fingers through more circumference of the ball , creating more
natural revolutions with little effort.

On the other hand, a (side-of-the-ball) stroker style bowler needs to maintain a somewhat more erect posture at release to avoid rolling the ball with too much axis tilt (since they are on the side of the ball at release).

Also, too much early spine tilt can often cause the bowler to "chase" the ball, resulting in poor timing and lack of leverage.

As with most everything, this is not a one size- fits all. Generally speaking however,
those that throw with 2 hands, and those who uncoil their wrists at release, do better by utilizing quite a bit more forward spine tilt than those who release the ball
in the old suitcase position (Like Liz Johnson).  Everybody's abilities are different in determining how much tilt they can comfortably deploy without risking
their ability to repeat consistent, quality shots.

Good luck!
