Switch grip question
« on: March 17, 2005, 09:27:23 PM »
Hello all, thinking of trying this out and am looking for opinions from people who use it or have tried it. Likes, dislikes etc. Also is there anyplace online I can purchase the kit and who makes the best one? Thanks for the help.

I have it installed in four balls and have two of each size thumb insert from 61/64" to 1".  That way when the thumb swells, just pop in a bigger insert in the strike and spare ball and it's happy times again.

To get the thumb slugs to fit right was the problem.  I needed to file out the front edge at the tendon and open up the top all the way around so I could get my thumb deep enough into the ball but still have it fit the knuckle.  It took a lot of slow careful work, because once it's gone you can't put it back.  It took about a month to get it right but now this system is outstanding.  I used to go through anywhere from 0 to 15 pieces of tape in the thumbhole each night with each ball I used.  The tape irritated the thumb and it swelled faster if it wasn't put in right so it was a never ending battle.  Winter to summer the thumbhole changes were huge so this system is the answer for me.  The only drawback is it isn't cheap and you need some good proshop equipment to install it, as you have to grind off the excess sleeve and insert so it fits flush.  I believe my system is made by Vise Grip.  A drawback  for the installer was the drill stop for the bigger sleeve drill didn't work well on a horizontal drilling machine.

I have in most of my equipment.
I love it. I use a custom molded thumb.
It takes a little longer to install but is well worth it.
I have been using it for a couple of months with no problems.

I have drilled several balls with Turbo's Switch Grip system and I like it. After the season when I have more time I am going to install it into my equipment.

Those that have their thumbs swell will get good use out of it. But I see it as best for those that bowl and their thumb actually shrinks. Those are the bowlers that seem to need it the most.

Cooksey,   I have seen and used the switch grip by Turbo. Product is good, but I personally like Griploc out of Michigan...    www.griplocproducts.com   You can buy them right online or fax an order or by phone. The sleeve that installs in your ball is $4.00 and the different size thumb inserts are $6.00.  They sell a bowlers kit for $18.95 with 3 different inserts and 1 outer ball sleeve with up to 3 additional outers for $3 a piece. As with both products are a little tricky to install with the critical part is being consistent in the depth of the sleeve in the ball so your insert will set the same height from ball to ball...great system...once you get your thumb or thumbs worked out you can switch balls and have the exact same feel...also can punch up a new ball, wait a few hours to dry the glue and throw it without fighting the thumb and have a ball with a great feeling urethane slug for $4 in the thumb....I keep about 4 sizes of inserts and all are customized ovaled by working them out myself....round sizes are available by 64ths and you can go from there. The outer and inner piece works well with bevel knife etc.....Easier to install and work than turbos switch grip.Any questions give me a shout,   Alzgarvin

I've seen this in my proshop and thought it looked interesting, however fact that they did not "feel" like my oval thumbs made me shy away from them.
