Lane finishes
« on: January 28, 2009, 07:28:11 AM »
It seems like the most used or most talked about lane finish is Guardian.  I'm not too sure what these do but I imagine they go on top of the finished lane ( synthetic or Wood) and protect the actual lane surface from the wear and tear of the ball rolling on them.. please correct me if I am wrong ...
anyway.. from what I have read Guardian has alot of friction..
I see there are many others approved by USBC.  Since alleys(atleast in my area) are complaining about the cost of oiling lanes, why don't they use a surface finish that pretty slick already so they don't have to lay down so much oil?

You are kinda right, and kinda wrong. Guardian is a synthetic overlay that is put on top of (usually) aging wood lanes. It is installed to be a "ghetto" synthetic lane material. Guardian overlays are much, much cheaper than installing all new synthetic lanes. One of the reason people talk about guardian so much, is usually to complain. Guardian does not hold oil very well so you begin to notice carrydown and the heads breaking down much quicker than synthetic and even more so than (properly maintained) wood.

About it being slick and thus needing less oil - thats not true. Imagine this, you go to your local center that has synthetic approaches. If you feel them, they are very slick, however, if you throw your ball on it, you notice that it hooks and then stops hooking instantly...

Just because the lane surface is more slick, does not mean that it does not need oil.

Guardian is actually a very soft material, bowling-wise. So the oil in the heads tends to disappear and, lucky for us users of it, tends to re-appear down at the breakpoint area. Oh, Joy!

Typically, Guardian overlay lanes seem to need to largest adjustment during the 3 games of league. A normal range used to be about 12 - 15 boards with your feet through those 3 games. When I bowled on a full 60 feet of Guradian, it was not a very enjoyable experience. Huge adjustments, plus trying to find a way around, through or in front of carrydown.

That said, today, I bowl regularly in a different house which has the fron half covered by Guardian and the read half is "normal" pine. The pine happens to be in very good shape and I think it was just last year that they got a new Guardian to replace the old. There is a huge difference between this house and the old house which had the 60 ft of Guardian. In this one, the oil maintenance chief really knows his oil and is a bowler there. He takes meticulous care of his machines (just got a new Kegel machine in) and we rarely see carrydown and the shot actually holds up, with more normal moves of 3 - 6 boards over 4 game blocks. So I guess the main difference is a single man who cares about bowling. Funny that!
