"Other" tournament formats? Collecting ideas.
« on: August 30, 2009, 08:46:53 PM »
Hi, I am asking here for some ideas or experiences with... non-standard tournament formats, like No Tap and the like.

Background is that my club just founded an own division for the upcoming season, and we are planning a club championship next year. Since we have enough "serious" bowling in league during the season, we consider a "different" tournament to battle for the club champion title.

No Tap is surely one option, but very frequent. Another format I found (and already played) is a "Phantom game" format, where a player does 3 games, and a 4th virtual game is built from the best respective frames as a kind of "best of".

It should not be too complicated, and the focus is onm having some fun - and the format should preferrably work for single players. If you have some ideas or formats to share, I'd be glad for some creative input

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Dizzy,

"40 frame" is great for fun!
You can also try "lowest game". You aim to score the lowest in one game (gutter balls are counted as strikes).

Have fun

A 40 frames format sounds odd - I have never seen such a thing around here!
Does anybody have (perhaps...) a scoring sheet for a 40 frames game(e .g. in Excel) or knows a link for such a file? It really sounds cool and funny. Thanks you, Natal!

Dizzy,

What is the scoring system in your center? Some versions of Advantage had it installed if I'm not mistaken..

And please let me know if you can find a scoring sheet of any kind

Not sure - it is a Brunswick software, and already a couple of years old.

Dizzy, we ran a no tap with a little twist.  All splits count as spares, or you have the option of trying to convert the split.  If you do, it turns into a strike.  If not, it turns into an open.

We also had some buttons made up with "X" on them.  Ran no tap, depending on your average, you got 1, 2, or 3 buttons.  If you failed to strike, you turned in a button and got a "do over".  Once you ran out of buttons, you were on your own.

The buttons idea is nice, kind of joker

Thank you for the input, SrKegler!

Anyone else?

A house I used to bowl in ran a weekly Ten Strike Tournament.  It was bowled as open play anytime lanes were available.  First game, automatic strikes in the third, sixth, and ninth frames.  Second game, automatic strikes in the second, fifth, and eight frames.  Third game, automatic strikes in the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth (first strike only) frames.  They charged for three games plus the prize fee and used the extra game charge (you actually only bowl two games) to build a "bonus fund" that was used to guarantee first place prize money, the guarantee increased each week.  At the end of the series all of the "bonus fund" was included in place money.  --  JohnP

Hell's Kitchen idea...

You have a team and the losing team has to vote the bowler off the team.
