If a ball is not rolling then there is NO WAY it can hook. Try throwing one on ice (albeit and older one)...It will skid forever...No hook possible because it can never reach any roll. A ball must begin to roll, at least somewhat, directly prior to its hooking. I never said any of the steps had to be noticable. BUT they DO EXIST. For a small fraction of a second the ball will not be hooking or skidding. It is mearly rolling as the friction buildup occurs and then directional change occurs. Roll spot is an equillibrium between pure skid and pure hook. Then the directional change occurs, and the ball reaches another equillibrium point, hook out. Then roll out occurs when the balls forward momentum overcomes its lateral momentum.

The way I personally look at it is like this. I think its skid hook roll.

You throw the ball
It skids
Now this is where people are getting all caught up
The ball WOULD roll, if it were going straight, but its not.
The ball makes friction, WHICH IS NOT ROLLING, it makes friction, turns the corner. That is the hook
Then after it has a set direction, it continues rolling in that direction.
Some people say this is roll OUT, but I disagree, I think the only thing that is roll OUT is when the ball loses its energy and hitting power, and just because it has a set direction of travel does NOT mean its lost its power.

Thank you for your time. lol

So basically your ball stops hooking on the backend, and just rolls?

What do you think a hook set drilling does???

It does exactly that.

Ive tried hook set, i get bad carry. Now all my equipment has constant move on the backend(both arcinging and some angular), and I like that better.

But nothing i have just hooks and sets, and just rolls straight into the pocket. Thats what my wow does when it burns out on the back. )hence i leave very ugly splits, and sometimes my favorite, the 10 pin)

Two questions.

has everyone here read the BTM article?

Has everyone here making a comment understand Physics 101?

the ball is defined by mathematics to have 3 important transitional areas with influences from 2 forces rotation and direction

measured by friction the skid phase means there is more force in the direction thrown and the rotation of the ball can not effect the direction of the ball.SKID

as friction increases and speed decreases. the rotation of the ball influence the path of the ball. and direction has a major contribution in the ball path HOOK

as speed is further decreased and the primary influence of direction is now the ball rotation. ROLL

Roll out is the loss of the rotation influence but no further increase  of the ball direction force. minor transition but important.

oil carry down and spots effect the ball but are not a foundation of ball reaction.

everyone has their opinions, but you know what they say about that.

so there are 3 major phases of directional forces EDIT: Skid/Hook/roll on all oil patterns.

until you disprove Physics I would stick with what math says, and not what you perceive.

Omega, you just said two different things, which do you believe? First you said Skid/Hook/Roll, then you said Skid/Roll/Hook
