Ideas to help make a Pro Shop green.
« on: December 04, 2008, 11:22:52 AM »
I am nowhere near an environmentalist, but these ideas have helped me save money in addition to "going green"

Buy towels in bulk (micro-fiber and/or cloth) and reuse the plastic bags that (insert wrist brace name here) come in after they are sold.

Buy polishes in bulk and refill the single use bottles for customers to buy or use for the shop.

Do not throw away a used finger insert that has only been used on one side. Vise and Tenth Frame are dual-sided and if the insert is still intact, you can use the good side on a new customer.

Buy insert tape in bulk and sell by the piece. Sell customers reusable containers to hold the tape.

Buy Buff-a-Balls in bulk and reuse the plastic bags that wrist braces come in.

Recycle all cardboard boxes used for bowling balls, shoes and shipped products.

That's all I have at the moment. I'm sure there are many more to help a shop save money on the way to becoming green.

The grips aren't half worn. One half of the insert is oval and the other half is power oval. If one customer only uses the oval side, the insert is still in one piece and the power side hasn't been used, I see no reason to waste the insert.

I save used inserts that are in good condition and soak them in a spray nine/water bath.  For customers a little stingy on spending or looking for more of a deal than the price of the ball I offer them the used inserts and Vinyl thumbslugs (which I bought a huuuuuge lot on a ridiculous discount and can sell for around 5 or 6 bucks).  All of the other "going green" tips we and alot of other shops I have seen use the same methods.  Call it cost/space cutting, but it's all good advice.

But you don't mind handling a ball that traveled down a dusty lane and through a nasty machine with oil and crud all over it.

Sure....makes sense

Most of the grips I have seen taken out are ripped to hell. I have not seen many pro shop guys get them out with out tearing and ripping them. Makes them hard to reuse.

If a pro shop operator can't take a grip out without destroying the other side of the insert they need to find new work....or the person that glued them needs to find a new career.

I like the grip reuse idea, with a modification.  The grip belongs to the customer from whose ball it was removed.  I would offer to flip the grip over and reglue it for him if he so desired at a minimal charge, $3 maybe.  Then if he still wanted new grips I would have no problem with cutting off the top half, cleaning and reselling the bottom half, again at a reduced price.  --  JohnP

Star mixing your own Green ball cleaning mixtures, with all the Green cleaning products it would be easy to do and cheaper by buying the mix in bulk.

You would be surprised of how versatile Vinegar is, I use it with water to clean my tile floors and it works better with a mop than about anything else made.

I don't have any problem with saving the used grips and selling them to somebody else that wants them, as long as they know what they are getting. If I bought a set of "new" grips and found them to be "not quite so new grips", I'd be pretty ticked.

If I was informed that they were used, and maybe half price, I see no problem with that.
